Ruger Single Six - Action work arrangements

OK guys a phone call today to Kenny Kelly at Mag-na-Port has resulted in an agreement to let Kenny do the action work on my recently purchased 9.5" Ruger Super Single Six. The action job he did on the Ruger SBH I won last year at the Whiteoak Handgun Hunt was the best feeling Ruger I've ever held so I decided to go with someone I have experience with.

He will be doing it as a Project Gun in return for a review and a banner in the rotation here at GBO. The work he will be doing on it is:

A full action job: Check headspace, cylinder gap, smooth internal parts to remove creep, lighten trigger pull to between 2.5 and 3 pounds if possible, timing work, recut forcing cone, number chambers and install Wolf springs.

The front sight replaced with a blued metal patridge type of same height as current front sight.

Additionally he will do the “dress up” things we discussed such as polishing trigger and hammer and the bronze coloring of grip and trigger guard he mentioned they have been experimenting with. I've given him carte blanch to do as he thinks best in this regard as I’m sure he knows best and they do some beautiful work on such things.

When he's done with it the gun will be a shore nuff custom job and a one of a kind revolver. I love the feel of the factory grips but might find something more custom in nature to add to it since when it gets back it will be a full custom job I reckon.

Definitely not cheap Lloyd but they do look nice. If I change them out stag or a fake ivory are likely to be what I go with. White micarta would be right up there as well but I understand that's not easy to come by. I have felt of the white grips on my Vaquero .32 Mag and they sure do feel fat and over weight compared to the grips on my Single Six. While good looks help feeling good in my hand actually will win out over looks for sure.

I've never really concerned myself about the factory applied lettering on gun barrels. Ya gotta look close to see it anyway. I guess it really doesn't bother me on or off Dan.

bill theres a big difference in real micarta and white plastic. Micarta is not cheap! It will cost you well over what elk stag does. I know dustin linebaugh gets as much for it as he does for fancy walnut. It is a good grip material though, Probably the strongest material out there and really good for guns like the big bores as it really takes a beating without getting banged up. You surely dont need it for a 22. If you want white go with one of the plastics or corian grips. You can pick them up on evilbay for around 50 bucks. Ive even picked up sets cheap at gunshows. Most will take some fitting so if your going that route i highly recomend you get a set right away and have magnaport fit them to the gun for you before they put on any fancy finishes.

Graybeard, I have had several guns done by Ken and I'm have always been extremely pleased with the results.  I think he enjoys showing off a little when I send him a gun.  I often ask him for a few particulars but then tell him to 'do whatever you think'.  No, his work is not in-expensive but I think when you handle the finished results, you will feel every penny has been well spent.  Ken's gunsmith's talents are excellent, but his cosmetic work is absolutely first class!  44 Man

Yeah I'm sure I'll be pleased. He did the work on the Ruger SBH I won at the White Oak hunt last December. I've never felt a better trigger on a Ruger and am not sure I've ever felt any handgun action that was better from anyone. That's why I went to him first. Well that and I know Kenny personally which didn't hurt either. 

That's a nice looking set of grips you have there and I guess something similar would be my first choice IF they can be made thin enough to feel like what's on it now. While I like purdy I like function even more and the factory grips really feel great in my hands. Some kinda white grip with scrimshaw would also look really nice but those on my little .32 Vaquero don't feel nearly as good to me as the black checkered ones on this gun.

bill i recently got a set of stags from pat that cover all the bases. there real thin. he was skeptical about even sending them to me as he thought i wouldnt like them. There probably the nicest set ive gotten from him. They have no bark at all but do have alot of color. Personally I think they look even better then the pairs i have with bark. They almost look like aged ivory but with a tad more color. They would make a neat set of grips to have scrimshawed. If you gave pat a call he might even cut you a deal on a set like that as most people like alot of bark in there stags. Nice thing too is elk stag isnt as durable as sambar stag as its more porous. The more bark the more porous it is. The first set of elk stags i got were from eagle and they were really beautiful but so porous that the griip screw sucked right through the grip. The set of non barked ones he sent me are as hard as sambar.
