Triggers on Sigs, compared to others, good or bad?
« on: November 06, 2007, 02:07:18 PM »
I have never owned a Sig 226 or 229 before, never shot one either.  My problem is I hate the triggers on most modern double action pistols.  Had a Baretta 92, hated the trigger, sold it.  My CZ-75's are nice, have two of those, my Springfield XD-9, trigger is that spongy type that is so common to prevent accidents in police use.  Have shot Glocks and H&K USP pistols, too.

I know that Sigs are well liked, and not cheap either, but I can see paying for quality if that is what it takes.

Compared to the others that are so common, how are Sigs, do they have the usual sponge trigger with the long travel?

Thanks.

In the standard Sig Double Action/Single Action trigger, the trigger pull is not too unlike others of that type ... a little long and mushy for the initial DA pull, then decent in the SA mode thereafter.  For one thing, they purportedly get better with time; so an initial test in the store isn't necessarily as good as it will be after 500 rounds.  Also, many people change out the springs, giving a different feel.
Further, Sigs have some variations on their triggers, including an aftermarket "short" trigger (reducing reach a little), a "DAK" trigger, which is a double-action-only system, single-action-only (on some models), and a short-reset trigger (also only on some models, I think, and needs to be done by a gunsmith).  Each is a little different and has its fans and detractors.
I recommend you go over to "Sigforum.com" and ask there under their "Sig pistols" sub-forum (you'll have to "register" to ask stuff).  Those guys know EVERYthing about Sigs and many own a lot of other guns, too, so they can give you good comparative information.

I own a few Sig pistols from the base model to the tricked out Sport.  I like the Sig products because they fit me and I can get on target quickly in the action shoots I attend.  All of the triggers are similar and are similar to other brands.  A service handgun is a service handgun and you have to remember that these are service DA handguns.  Try some of the new single action guns like the X5 if you want a crisp target trigger.  My suggestion is to go to a shooting range and rent a few different autos.  See what is comfortable in your hands.  I like to ensure the fire arm is unloaded, pick a spot on the wall of the gunshop.  Hold the pistol at the low ready and close your eyes.  Yes, close your eyes!  and raise the pistol up to where the spot on the wall is.  Take a steady hold and open your eyes.  You should be looking down the sights and really close to if not on the spot.  This is a gun that fits your hold and style of shooting. The trigger is something that can be gotten used to the more you shoot the gun.  Stop spending money on newguns and buy / reload ammo and shoot the pistol that fits you till the trigger is second nature.  If you want a really nice trigger buy a target .22 pistol and spend time and money shooting rather than looking for the best target service handgun.
Hope it was helpfull.

I own one of the original (pre-ban) Poldi steel CZ-75's and it is by far the finest pistol that I own...  That said, I also own a pair of early SIG P226's and I would rate them a close "second" to the CZ.

Oh, I neglected to mention that my glove-size is "large" and people with smaller hands may experience problems having to "shift" grip to rapidly work the gun. YMMV
Politicians and diapers both require frequent changing for the EXACT same reason…

I have owned and enjoyed some ten different Sig's, (and still own 5), all with the standard DA trigger.  They are fine triggered guns, even exceptional.  One of course cannot with integrity compare them to anything but DA guns. Always consider the design purpose. The Sig DA is "military/ poice ready with no safety yet can be caried safely and be instantly ready for action. Having said that their triggers do improve with use, (or accelerated use ie the ".25 cent trigger job"), or some pay for a bit of trigger work.  As new the triggers will have some grittiness. This wears away with use and one is left with an exceptional DA trigger that with practice allows one to achieve tight groups even with the first shot figured in.
Sigs are worth every penny one pays.

My Sig P229 and Beretta 92FS have nearly identical trigger pulls in DA/SA. I like both weapons.

In my opinion most of the added cost of a SIG is spent in the trigger dept.  the SIG pros have excellent triggers and are also the lowest cost SIGs. They do get smoother with use. SIG offers an action enhancement package that will slick it up even more. They won't reduce the pull weight but do polish things up nicely.  If you are really interested give them a call in Exeter, N.H., they have many options in the trigger area. Three actions, short reach, and a short reset pkg.

Sig Forum will wear you out with info, they are knowledgeable, without being fan boys.
