sad day-old duck-tape 30-06 stolen
« on: November 07, 2007, 04:19:38 PM »
my old duck taped-up 30-06 handi-rifle is gone, i have had this old gun for seven or eight years, it was a tough old gun, beat around on the tractor and the truck, it was dropped in the pond, found and cleaned, ran over by tractor and broke stock, there fore the old duck-tape 30-06 handi, its killed many a deer and coyote over the years, a great old beat-up handi-rifle was stolen today from the bed of of my pick-up, yes from the bed of my truck, i bad about leaving the old gun in the truck bed, well today i when into a local quick-mart to get gas, came back out to the pick-up and the gun was gone, its not worth 100.00, but to me its worth 500.00, but its gone, i'm just gald i have other handi-rifles, but which one to make a tractor rifle,it will get beat-up with dirt-mud-rain, or should i buy a new 30-06 and put on the tractor?

Man, I hate a thief.  Someone took all of my father in law's fishing rods out of his boat when he stopped at EZ Mart the other day.

Sorry for your loss.  Look for a used Handi would be my guess.  That way you aren't out too much.  Would be good to have iron sights, which might take a little searching.

That really stinks man.  Nothing worse than a thief.  I gotta say though, that is pretty irresposible to leave a gun in your truck bed.  As gun owners, we need to be a little more careful than that.  Who knows who has that now.  Better make sure you report it. If it was to turn up in a crime of some sort you would have a lot of explaining to do otherwise.

I agree with darat, you cannot be too careful in this situation...report it immediately...and lets all be careful with our firearms.

darat100, i agree with you, i should not had rifle in back of my pick-up, but its been there for over a month or so, just a old farm truck that stays on the place, we hunt out of it and use it here on the farm it has no tag or stickers, just a old get around hunting/farm truck 1989 ford 4x4 pick-up, i am just glad they did't get the smith and wesson mod 686 357 mag under the seat, here we all have guns in our trucks year round, rifles and handguns, but i will miss my old duck-tape 30-06 rifle.

Sorry bout the loss. You might pass the word around for your friends to be on the lookout for somebody trying to sell it, or somebody looking for a stock for one. Axe handle justice is a good cure for things like this.  ::)

Hey come on guys take it easy!

This is an old farm /work truck, and if you have ever been in a rural area and saw one you would know, that most people look at them and respect them as a tool for a man to make a living, and leave anything and everything alone that is either inside, or hanging to the outside of the truck.

That old gun was a tool, and it was in the back of the truck, his truck, and that should be secured enough in my opinion, and no person has a right to reach into that bed to retrieve anything, such as guns, knives, axes, or hammers etc.

You might say, that you would have locked the gun in the truck, but people have been known to break into locked cars as fast as reaching into an open bed.

That said, it should always be reported in order to give the local LEO some idea as to who is working in the area, and with the hope that they will be on the lookout, so it doesn't happen so soon again!

The shame of it, is that the crackhead or panhandler, will trade it for a fix or a six pack, and it was a little more valuable to you.

And who knows, the new owner may just clean it up, put some cinnamon lams on it, and give it a good home that it deserves!

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

People SHOULD respect the property rights of others. But the sad fact of life is that morality has slipped so far in America these days that way too many DON'T anymore. You really just can't leave your stuff laying around in open view for others to see any longer and expect to keep it. Those days are gone and I suspect never to return. It used to be when I was a kid you didn't even need to lock your doors at night or even if you went on vacation. Just the fact your door was closed was all that was necessary to prevent entry. That's HISTORY and will never return.

It's actually quite irresponsible these days to leave a gun displayed and openly available for anyone to just reach in and pick up in such a place as a truck bed IF you are in a public place especially. I don't know where you live but now in many jurisdictions you could be in more trouble for allowing it to be taken so easily than the theif who took it and more especially so if it's used in a crime.

If it's used in a crime and traced back to you which it will be if you bought it at a dealers place and perhaps even if bought from an individual then for sure most places you will be in trouble if you do not report the theft to the police so at least go do that if you haven't. There are a few places in this country now you're already in trouble with the law for allowing it to be stolen. That's truely sad and the fact you felt it OK in your area to do it is pretty strong evidence you're not living in such a place.

At least do report the theft to the police to CYA in case it later gets used in a crime. Don't rule out that possibility just because it's a single shot. Criminals aren't overly smart or gun smart so might use anything when high on drugs and needing money for more.

I live in an area where we still don't lock the doors and I always leave the keys in my old Ford Ranger but I do put valuables out of sight, why test people?

I also live in a real good area now. It is a rural area and I have been here 5 years. There is almost no crime in my town. I have not taken the keys out of my truck since I have lived here and really feel no reason to. This was not the case the last place I lived. I lived just outside Columbus OH for a couple years and we had an ice storm one night. When I started the truck I put the defrosters on and after I had just a couple small hole to look through I took off to the store I get my cup tea every morning. I let the truck run ( while I went into the store )  to finish thawing the windows. I was starting a basement job that morning and had a very good part of my tools in the bed of the truck inside the cap. I bet I had $7,000.00 in tools in there. When I came out of the store there was a Black guy       ( looked like a crack head ) getting in my truck. I yelled HEY HEY HEY what the *#%@ are you doing. He said I'zz just checking out yo truck. I said do you always open the door of other peoples trucks when you checking them out. He I'zz might want to buy me one of these ones here. I pushed him away from the truck. Went inside the store told the cashier to call the police. I went back out got in the truck and followed this guy. I called 911 on my cell phone and relayed to the operator where he was. He ducked into a laundry mat. A couple minutes later there was about 8 cop cars there. Some in front and some in back. They went in and got him. He was in the bathroom. He ditched his hat and coat to change the way he looked from the description I had given over the phone. They did not arrest him because he was not in the seat of my truck yet. I told the cop do you really believe he was not stealing my truck. He said no he was going to steal it for sure but we can't do anything because all he did was open your door and motion like he was getting in it but never sat down in your seat before you caught him. I told him the cashier said I should have kicked his ass. He said if I had he would have looked the other way. That is one time I should of kicked this guys ass and regret it. I thought if I had I would have been the one going to jail. If he would have got away with my truck I would have been out of business for awhile. Till I could work it out with the insurance company. why test people?

Just leave a small gas can in the bed of your truck with the fluid of your choice (like water). It's not really a test, it's payback.

Someone that I know was tired of his lunch being stolen from the breakroom when he was working nights.  This person subsituted canned catfood for sandwich spread for a couple of days.  This person hopes that the thief got worms or......something.

It was satisfying to know even if he never saw someone eat the sandwiches.

jimbo47 and greybeard, thank both of you for your posts, this is the first time i have been back on here since i made the post about the old 30-06 stolen, its gone i will miss it, it has been replaced with a 308 cal handi-rifle, i have two other 30-06 rifles, but they are not like the tough old handi-rifle,jimbo47, you must be a ole country boy or farmer like me, i guess times are just a changing, from now-on i will not leave a rifle in back of my old truck when i go into town to get gas and maybe a cold beer, there were two tool boxes full of tools, there was two stihl chainsaws each worth more than a handirifle, but i guess thats how a crack-head thinks, from now on i need to think like them, as far as what to leave in your truck be careful, it may not there when you get back,

The stuff I have to leave out, like the shovel, gets a few squirts of paint on the handle.

That also makes finding the darn things a bit easier out in the mud, when I'm working. I don't know how much time I spent trying to find the grub hoe while clearing land, just to find I was standing on the handle!
