After a lousy bow season (missed 5 deer would you believe), including last Sunday a 6 and a massive 8, it all came together today. A perfect vital shot just behind the right shoulder. The arrow did not exit the left. He went about 70 yards. Blood trailing wasn't necessary
A 10 point, 170lb Whitetail taken @ 19 yards with my Mathews Ultra2 ... nothing like the 8 I missed, but I'll take it none the less.
Here is the story from my hunting blog and a couple of photos:
1550 - Had seen nothing, not even squirrels. Then I looked over my left shoulder and from the thicket about 60-70 yards out I spotted a deer walking in from almost directly downwind. As soon as I saw him I immediately saw the shine on his antlers from the setting sun. I had no idea what size just that there was a rack. At about 40 yards he stopped and started grooming himself for a minute or two ... a good sign as I was up wind and obviously my Scent Blocker clothing was working as he was totally at ease. He started walking in again, that arrogant strut bigger bucks have when they own the woods and I started calculating where he was going and where I might take a shot. If he kept on his current course down the deer trail, I decided on a small clearing to my left front which would leave him almost broadside. I also decided to take the shot sitting as I didn't want to spook him by movement. As he went behind a tree I drew and then I stopped him in the middle of the clearing right on 19 yards, carefully put my 20 yard pin on his vitals and released my arrow. It hit about 1" behind his right shoulder, a perfect shot. He started to run and his front legs collapsed and for the first 15-20 yards he pushed himself along the ground. He managed to get up and run and I heard the crashing of him going down just over the small rise about 60-70 yards to my front but just out of my sight even with my elevated position. I just could not wait my usual 30 mins and after 5 mins got down as I knew it was a good, quick and fatal shot. I started at where I shot him and started to follow the path he took until I had lost sight of him and as I came over the rise there he lay. I counted his 10 points and as you are aware I was over the moon. My biggest deer taken with a bow, no doubt at all.
