NEW MOVIE
« on: November 10, 2007, 04:24:52 AM »
I saw the movie "INTO THE WILD" a couple days ago. It's about a kid who just graduated from college who gives away $24,000 intended for graduate school and sets out on the road with a junker car. Soon he becomes a hitchhiker and eventually goes to Alaska and lives in a deserted bus in a remote area. I understand the story is more or less true.

I think that there is a book with that same title, probably where the movie came from. What was your opinion of the movie?

It's "inspired by a true story", watch the trailer, looks good, but think I'll wait for pay per view. ;)

Seeing as how Sean Penn was involved with the movie, I will read the book. Don't want a penny of mine lining his pocket.

The wife and I see about 40 to 50 movies per year. It bugs me to be putting money into the hands of some of the Hollywood people, but it is a compromise I make, and and my wife lets me buy guns and hunt. At first I did not think it would be worth watching for almost 2-1/2 hours but after a while it seemed like a good movie. My take on the movie was that the young adventurer a nice kid, but was a bit stupid and overconfident. I think it was worth seeing, but how picky is someone who sees 40 to 50 movies per year?

I only see two, maybe three, movies a year. Spent good money to see this one. Did not think it was true to the book, which I thought was absolutely fantastic. In the book it's clear that the kid never intended to come back to "civilization", live or die, the movie just makes him look naive and a little stupid.
Not many movies IMHO worth watching anymore.

Same here!  Totally agree with you, Pab

Otherwise sounds like an interesting story.

Here is a little thing I learned, being Alaskan.

Don't waste your time on anything that is "based" on truth about Alaska.  Because it will be, for lack of a better word, "idiotized."  Anything that goes through hollywood is pretty much a movie about california with a picture of Alaska in the background - Which is pretty, but the content makes it pretty stupid.

If there is any fiction at all, any interpretation at all, don't watch it, because it will be a total waste of your time.

The only things you should watch about Alaska should come from national geographic, the history channel, hunting shows, and maybe northern exposure  ;D (sorry, a good memory from years past...)

Here is the movie for you, even though I've never seen it:

Saw the movie last night.  It was GOD AWFUL.  2 1/2 hours of my life I will never get back.  I would have been more entertained by staring at the blank screen.  Depressing too.  The director should be flogged in public, then be made to apologize and never have anything to do with Hollywood again under penalty of death.  The kid was a moron with huge mental issues, the story had very little to do with the wilderness or survival.  According to the movie he only lasted like 12 weeks in the Alaskan bush with shelter, a stove and water?  I would rather have a vasectomy with a dull reciprocating saw than see another movie like this.

My girl forced me.  She said she enjoyed the book, and wanted to watch the movie to compare....

We turned it off part way through, load of crap.

I'm just curious as to what your beef with Sean Penn is? I don't like to watch E-TV or any of that other crap and could really care less about the people out in Hollywood as their over privileged lives are to just the opposite of mine. Just Curious is all

I watched the T Treadwell movie on pbs. then wrote them a scathing email. I pointed out the stupidity and outright lies presented. I told them  it was a waste of public money and if that was what they were spending my donations, do not expect any more.
