Brand-spank'in newby looking to buy or build a Handi-system.
« on: November 11, 2007, 10:14:25 AM »
Just found this forum, and must say it is the most dedicated I have EVER seen!

(In my youth I shot a full-length stocked H&R in .22 Hornet and loved it.)

I am looking to build up a couple of single shot systems but don't care for the store line-up options.

I would like to build up a .22LR/20gage for the grandkids with synthetic/shell holder stock.

And for me I would like to go with a long forend 22 Hornet/357Mag./12gage rifled slug gun.
I have been trying to find a full length forend stocked Hornet for a long time here in Indiana but to no avail!
I have browsed thru your classafieds here and will be buying some things as I learn the quirks of the different rifle/shotgun frames etc...

Is there a post or thread here on comparing the new style NEF, to Old H&R frames, and the shotgun, verses rifle frames?
Thanks for your time!
And again....GREAT SITE!

At the top of the centerfire forum there is a FAQ thread , it will show and explain the diffrence between the rifle and shotgun frames along with a ton of other Handi how -to's , check it out .

And WELCOME to the crazy world of Handis and GBO .

Welcome to GBO, liljohn!! GBO sponsor GSI offers mannlicher forends, but they don't show them on their website, you'll have to ask for them. They show up in the classifieds occasionally, H&R found a bunch of em in their warehouse a couple years ago, but they're long gone.

Welcome to GBO, the best Handi site on the web and some of the best guys you will meet.  I have two systems. I have a 223 Ultra Varmint and then ordered 357 and 30-30 barrels for it. I have recently bought a 44 Mag with synthetic stock/fore end and have just sent in for 22 Hornet and 444 Marlin barrels and cinnamon laminated stock/fore ends for it. I just got to have the laminated stocks. ;D

What part of Indiana are you in? I am in the Northeast corner, near Fort Wayne.

Thanks for the help!

I was not sure if I could build a one gun system using two different rifle barrels, and a shotgun barrel.

Now starts the quest to find parts!

Laotto That's where my grandad lived, and the other pair in Garrett!
I am in Angola. (A little more northeastern than you.)
Once I get some guns going we might have to meet at "mile corner" and punch some primers....in handgun cal. of corse.

Hello LilJohn.  This is a great forum for Handi-Rifles!

If you're looking to build a set-up based on the NEF rifle, acquaint yourself really well with NEF's "Barrel Accessory Program," their rules for what barrels they'll let you add and buy, but also the difference between the SB2 and SB1 receivers.

This last point is what's key to what barrels NEF will fit to your receiver/s you send back to them.

also ...... their site is www.hr1871.com

As for a case (soft or hard) to carry everything in, I'm still looking for one I'll be happy with - that doesn't cost too much!

New here too!  Love the site. Hey liljon and LaOtto222 I'm close by  Warsaw area.  So far I have 3 Handis all in 44 mag for Grandsons and wife to use in our new PCR season, also have .243 and .308 barrels they all shoot great. What a fun little rifle.

Welcome aboard Vic49. I actually have a LaOtto address and a Garrett phone. Kind of in the middle of them. Most people do not know where LaOtto is. I know where Warsaw and Angola are. Warsaw is about 45 minutes + or - from me. Angola is 30 miles to the North, just off of I-69. I used to work in Angola years ago and I attended Tri-State.  We need to get together one of these days to bust some caps and swap some stories.

Thompson Center and perhaps others made cases specifically for their Contender and Encore rifles that are made to carry one and I think two extra barrels inside as well. I'd think those cases would work equally well with your NEFs as long as you don't try to fit the longest of barrels in them. Cabela's has some Made in China Aluminum hard cases that are truly a super buy that should take a gun and several barrels no matter the length of them. They run less than $70 and appear to be the equal of cases normally costing two to three times that price.
