More BIG bullets to play with!!
« on: November 11, 2007, 10:54:52 AM »
Got some more bullets from Ranger Rick to test in the 45-120 and maybe the 45-70 if I can find data for it, the .458" 720gr WFNGC, there isn't much room for powder in the 45-70 case, so I don't know if that's gonna work out or not. even with my throated barrels.  Both are seated to just kiss the lands. Richard provided data for the 450-120 with velocities to 1479fps using XMR 4350, 1250fps with AA5744.

I'm guessing that missile has "stages" and "boosters"? ;D

Let us know how those monsters print...and, I'm curious to know what kind of free recoil figures you're dealing with.

LOL!!! Good one Doug, thanks!!! ;D

I won't know the recoil figure until I find out what kind of velocity I can get with em, but if I can get 1480fps, the recoil in an 8lb BC will be 65lbs, that''s in the ball park of a 458 Lott. :o

Here's a 45Colt round compared to this big honker!!

Tim, I do not think that heavy bullet will stabilize with 1-20" twist, what are you thinking ;) ;D ;D ;D You could just chuck at 'em ::)

Does it matter? Can you imagine what that would do hitting sideways!! :o

It's not likely to stabilize in the 45-70 with so little powder charge, but in the 45-120, it might, I'll find out.  :D

Tim would you mind standing that against may a 223 or 243 or some other round I may be familiar with. Or could you just measure it? Thanks Dale

Quick, did you put a bullet in the end of a chunk of brass pipe to tease us, or is that an actual cartridge there on the right?

The 12 gauge 3" Remington BuckHammer has a 602gr slug pushing 1500 fps and it has a brutal recoil.  You had better tie that Handi down.

That's a 45-120-3¼" Sharps Straight for my H&R Buffalo Classic 45-120. ;)

Not a problem, got a Lead Sled DFT.

Quick, is the Leadsled that good? I have a Navy Arms rolling block replica in 50-140-550 Sharps that I don't shoot anymore because my shoulder can't take the recoil. I would like to make some more big smoke clouds with it.

Another good one, Bil!  ;D

Quick, is the Leadsled that good?

Yes, think how little recoil you'd feel if you added up to 60lbs of weight to your rifle!!  http://www.chuckhawks.com/caldwell_lead_sled_DFT.htm

Quick, I have some of the .459 720 gr bullets and .500 700 gr bullets, just got them from KDM. I plan on using the .459 720 gr bullet in my 450 Marlin Mauser bolt action rifle, i can load them to crimp in the crimp groove and still have room for powder, will post the loads and velocities when i get to testing them, unfortunately, it will be after hunting season this year, but I will test them and post it, of course I will be loading the .500 700 gr bullets in my .500 SW Mag Handi rifle, will post the results for that one also, its not crazy to me to use such heavy bullets, that is the fun of testing and shooting....Jim  ;D
