opening weekend in Louisiana
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:49:04 AM »
After two slightly slow years behind us, as a result of Katrina scouring the marsh of duck food, this year we were looking good. The birds were down early and there were lots of them. We Were greeted with long lines at the boat launch and were cursing our bad luck getting a bit of a late start. 6 of my buddies were all hunting together out of two go devil boat blinds on a great lease. All of us are professional fishing guides so we had been seeing all of the ducks and we were excited. When we got to the lease, we were confronted with reality, there was no water in the marsh, he river is low and the tide was also dead low. We knew that it would e low, but we didn't expect it to be this bad. We split up and both boats found a puddle to set up in. In my blind, we saw tons of birds but they didn't want to work, we managed 7. 2 Grey ducks, a red head, a wigeons and 3 pintail. the other boat had 3. We decided o call it and make an evening hunt. This is whee it gets fun. We went and had breakfast and watched a little of the Miss St. and Bama game. At 1:30 we set out again but with a slightly different crew. I got to hunt with a Buddy Evan and his Girlfriend Pop Gun Pattie. They had not hunted in the Morning. We found a pond in which the water was coming up and put out about 2 dozen decoys. Before the last decoy was set, we had a blue wing down. Pop Gun smoked him. Then the big ducks stated to come, mostly Greys and widgeon. We let pop gun shoot first and often, hen provided back up as needed. Very little was needed. I had more fun watching her shoot than I had shooting myself. It is so neat seeing some one new to the sport get all worked up and excited. We finnished out with a limit short of what I shot in the morning. Our buddies in the other boat blind did just as well, with all big ducks consisting mostly of  Greys and wigeonn but with a Pintail  added for good measure. Duck hunting down here is a bit time consuming and Laboreous and requires some investment,  but man is it fun. I had to fish on Sunday but the rest of the crew hunted and they decided to leave at noon and smoked them. Some of them decided to hog hunt in he morning and they killed a few pigs as well.

sounds like you had a lot of good fun. Your right,it is something to see someone new at the sport having a good time.My buddy and I used to guide goose hunts around our area...the best times for me is when there were kids involved or anyone new to the sport.
I'm glad to hear it all went well. I remember those days.........ah....those days.
