Need help quick on Ultra Slug
« on: November 12, 2007, 06:21:03 AM »
I have a 20 gauge Ultra Slug that I went to shoot today.  I could only pull the hammer back about 1/4 of the way??  Our gun season opens this Saturday and need some help with this.  Also I have a 10 gauge  and was wondering if I could put the barrel on that action to get by till this is resolved.  How do you swap the barrels?  I will do a search on this but I am in need of help quick.  Thanks

Note:  I compared the 20 gauge to the 10 gauge and on the 20, the tranfer bar cannot be seen??
Another Note:  I turned the gun upside down and pulled back on the hammer and shook the gun and the tranferbar fell out.  I swapped the 20 gauge barrel to the 10 gauge frame and am going to shoot it now and see how it does.  I am just going to call Marlin and see about send the gun in and get it repaired.  Is this a common problem??  Thanks again.

Someone will jump in here and give you a hand but I don't think barrel is the problem. Kurt

Yes, it's not uncommon for it to happen, just enough to be aggravating, if you're the DIY type, you can fix it. I keep a spare one just in case, but I've never had one break in any of my 30 some H&Rs, but you know murphy's law. ::)

Thanks for the help, I swapped barrels and shot it to make sure is was still on zero.  I called H&R and they said to send it in no problem.

I think I read on here somewhere that only 10ga barrels and 12ga ultra slug barrels can be used on a 10ga frame.

Mine seemed to fit fine.  The zero of the scope was a little off, about 2 inches low at 50 yards, but after 2 shots it was 2.5" high at 50 yards and shot 3 holes touching.

The SB2 10ga frame is made for barrels that are 1.2XX" in diameter at the chamber, the standard SB1 shotgun frame is made for barrels that are 1.1XX" at the chamber.

So should I not use the 20 gauge Ultra Slug barrel on the 10 gauge frame?  Are the action parts all the same, where I could swap the internal parts till I get it repaired?

Yes, the transfer bar(lifter and striker) is the same, so you could swap the parts out. As Digger said, you can call H&R and they might send you the parts, but you can also order it from Brownell's, if you order it today, you'll have it by the end of the week.

I ended up putting in it on my 10 gauge frame but the fit was a little sloppy, so I found out my youngest brother had a Topper that is about 20 years old.  We put the barrel on it and it fit very nice.  Shot it in and it is going to the woods Saturday.  Funny thing, my dad has been watching me try and cobble a gun together and he said I look like "Tuco" from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  When he was putting him a six shooter together.
