Carriages and skids for Brooks cannons and mortars ?????
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:41:22 PM »
Is there anyone that makes the proper scale skids and carriages for their cannons and mortars? I don't have proper tools or skills, and I would like to get a slightly elongated skid for one of their smaller mortar barrels to use as a gift for my grandson who wants to be a mortar-man in the Marine Corps. I want to have a brass plaque cut to fit in front of the the mounting with a 2 line engraving, ie

So I would need probably an extra inch forward of the barrel, or alternatively, an extra 1 1/2 inches thickness to permit the plaque to be placed on the side. I have an idea how I would like it to look, but I have little experience in this area, and I would like it to be ready as a Christmas gift.
Something that would be fit to be displayed on a Marines desk.

thanks in advance

Do you have a mortar barrel yet?  What style are you considering?

Just a thought, but you could have a brass dog tag made and use that for the plaque.

I do have a .22 brass mortar barrel from Brooks, but the length forward of the tube on the one that I have is not deep enough to mount any kind of plaque. I really wanted the barrel to be behind the plaque, although I am thinking the dogtag idea would work out pretty well, thanks for that idea Victor3. I may just run down to the local PX and see if they have something like that there.

Doc,

When you know the dimensions of the tag, let me know, I'll cut the length to make this work. Maybe, one day, I'll be called a carriage maker.
