Detachable magazine conversion for a Remington VLS .243 rifle ?

My brother recently bought a Remington VLS .243 rifle (laminated stock, 26 inch heavy varmint barrel). From the safety and storage aspect of being able to simply remove the cartridges from the rifle (particularly when hunting / travelling in a vehicle) he is not overly happy with the hinged magazine floor plate system and would like to know if it’s possible to adapt the rifle to a quick release DETACHABLE  MAGAZINE (such as in the Remington BDL) or an after marker 5 or 10 shot mag. We would greatly appreciate any advice in relation to this matter.

If you can find the DBM bottom from a Remington with a short action then the conversion is possible. All the M700 actions are the same and many parts will interchange. The stock will require a little modification to allow the buttons on the side of the mag to properly seat and release. I converted a M721(the old long action version of the M700) to a DBM from it's stamped sheet steel original issue... Works great. You might call Remington customer service and check the availability of parts for the DBM they still have. Remember the rifle you have will require the short action DBM components.

Three other conversions which won't require a new stock are the Kwik-Klip, HS Precision, and Badger that uses Accuracy Int'l magazines. Of the three, the Kwik-Klip looks more like a sporting rifle and fits flush. The other two are more military looking, and the magazines protrude. The AI mags are the best quality and feeding of all, but you might not like the looks of them on a sporter rifle.
