Happy Holidays All,

In doing my research for a .357 Magnum chambered Handi Rifle, I spoke with the NEF/H&R Customer Service people last week.

The customer service rep informed me that the model number for the 2008 production run .357 Magnum chambered rifles will be SB2 S35.  This gun is supposed to come with a scope base but no iron sights.  Something I found weird for a pistol caliber rifle.

Ultimately, earlier today I bought a new SB2 S44 (.44 Magnum) Handi.  It had iron sights and synthetic stock.  I may now abandon my plans altogether for a .357 magnum chambered gun or accessory barrel.

Regards,
Rob

Welcome aboard Rob! That's what the specs at RSR show it as, same for the synthetic .444. The current accessory barrel comes with sights, if they change that, you can always order a barrel and have them add the sights for an additional $47 too. ;)

The cat is out of the bag for 2008

Was checking out SS and noticed some new offerings. New slug guns, trap gun, MAGNUMS, Ultra Hunter 45-70 with thumbhole stock, Synthetic .44/.357/.444, and a couple pumps. I also noticed that they did not have any Sidekick muzzleloaders listed.

Looks like all Item Numbers beginning with 52XXX are new items.

Slug guns, probably with the new rifling, walnut and thumbhole stocks.
Classified as Ultra Light and Ultra Heavy. Must be taking the place of the Tracker II and USH.

The trap gun sounds interesting, I wish they had a picture.

Thanks deadrabbit, I missed that one. I still don't see the Stainless Steel Sidekick though, just the blued one.

Also notice the Ultra Heavy 12ga is listed as being on a SB1 Frame.

I see no reason to change the stock design, that would only increase the cost.

That's what I was told, just a tougher alloy and better heat treatment. There wil also need to be something different about the magnum barrels so they can't be used on current SB2 frames, and the frame will need to accomodate that I expect.

I see earlier in this thread that the .300 WM is supposed to be stainless barrel. My wholesaler, RSR, has them listed already (not in stock), but only in blue. Will both be available ?

Both mags are listed as blued w synthetic stocks, the only new stainless is the 45-70 Ultra. The mags are supposed to have stainless barrels and blued frames, what we end up with remains to be seen, the .338 was also listed on the price sheets, but was cancelled. My dealer ordered one of the 7mm Mags from RSR for me a month ago. ;)

I can slap a stainless barrel on one of my thumbhole Ultras for ya, otherwise you'll have to wait for one, the stainless 45-70 is a new barrel, dunno for sure when it will be available, when I know, you'll know. ;)

So I was wondering if there has been any rumors of maybe making a handi or ultra in the new .17fireball caliber? And I want to say that I think gr8ful had something there with the .460 S&W. That would be a sweet little gun. Also like the .338 federal idea.

The .17 and .338 were discussed on page 1 of this thread, there are no plans for either at this time.

Tim.
I will be in Vegas for the Shot Show in 2008 and will get a first hand look at
the new goodies. Don't like the idea of the synthetic stocks. Perhaps they can be had in wood stocks too.

Me I am very interested in the new Tracker II 20g with the polygonal rifling,
this got to be a hammer forged process and should produce a dimensional
consistent bore if the barrels are hammered to the final dimensions. Stress relieving would not be an issue then..

Heckler and Koch produced special weapons with this type of rifling and Lothar
Walther also makes barrels with this kind of rifling.

Thanks Tim... I seen that about the .338 but I must have missed the part about the .17 fireball. I think that would be the perfect ultra varminter but what do I know? Maybe Remington will make it happen if and when the merger goes through.

A little new information on the UltraLight Slug gun and the Trap Gun.

Some new information on the 2008 UltraLight Slug Hunter. Looks like the old days of drilling and tapping the Tracker II's is finally over. Anybody want a Slug Hunter  with scope mount that weighs about 3 pounds lighter than the USH?? Looks like your prayers have been answered. I does come with the new Ultragon™ parabolic rifling. Read and enjoy!

I for one am quite happy to see that the 45-70 is going to be offered in a stainless version.  The Ruger Stainless No1 retails for over $1000, can be had for less but is still sky high.  Further, their stocks dont fit me well.  The Thompson Centers Encore and G2 sell for several hundred less, but still several hundred more than a Handi.

I could not see the price of the 45-70 Ultra on the earlier posts.  I expect it to be a good bit higher than a standard Handi, but a good bit less than the Thompson.

The Zanders MSRP is now $00, don't remember what it was, but Sports South has it listed as over $500 SSSRP, their suggested price for the 45-70 Handi is $309 and $472 for a  BC, I'm also guessing the THS is Thumbhole stock.

Thanks Tim,

I do most of my gun shopping at Whittaker's, once they get the new releases in stock I'll see what his prices are.  I suspect he will beat those prices by a bit.  I must admit, those prices are getting close to what TC's go for at Whittaker's.  Stainless G2s without sights go for around $530 if I remember correctly, Encores for closer to $600.  Still, for a stainless rifle with a laminate thumbhole stock, they should still be quite a bargin.
