.45vs.50 @400fpe
« on: November 14, 2007, 01:02:50 PM »
     Hi Veral,

I am about to order my custom barrel and need to come to a decision on caliber.  This will be a warm-up barrel design to the rifle we were discussing privately.

This rifle will be putting out about 400fpe regardless of which caliber I use as that seems to be the limit of the design thus far.

When comparing the ballistics of a 280grain .454 going 805fps, and a .505 350grainer going 720fps, given the usual meplat size you would recommend for both calibers and weights, which shows to be the best killer?  I am limiting range to about 75 yards so any difference in trajectory doesn't appear to play a significant role.
I sent you a PM.  Thanks again for the forum!

Since velocity isn't too far apart and range will be limited so trajectory isn't a problem,  I'd opt for the 50 caliber, to get a larger killing flat-nose.
