First Handgun Deer
« on: November 17, 2007, 06:26:42 AM »
I took this guy using my 15" .308 Encore with Federal 165gr Accubonds.  It was about 5:10 PM when he came in chasing a hot doe.  He was about 70 yds away and was on the ground at 5:15.  What an incredible experience!

Very Nice.  Must have been a little extra thrill in taking it with your Encore.  Well done.

Nice animal!

Hope he got to pass on those gene's!  Did you happen to get a weight/measurement(score)/age?  Just wondering, originally from Maine and wanted to see how deer from across the country stack-up against each other.

Thanks!

sbd777 - He was a 3 1/2 year old and his estimated weight is around 150lbs.  I don't have any measurements.  He's still at the meat processor.  He's a friend of mine and does an EXCELLENT job.

He is a good sized deer for around here.  There are much bigger around but they are hard to hunt.  Most of them are on private property as this one was and during hunting season they tend to not venture out of their sanctuary very much.  Two years ago I harvested a 5 1/2 year old ten point on public land 2 hours from where this one was taken.  He weighed close to 200lbs and had a 19 3/4" inside spread.  We do have nice deer around here but they are still not as big as the ones up North.  My dream is to one day go on a whitetail hunt in Alberta or Saskatchewan for a BEAST.
