Russian target pistol, your thoughts?

I saw this pistol for under $400 and wanted your opinion.  EAA IZH35M russian .22 target pistol. The reviews seem to like it and a few bullseye shooters liked it. Anybody here try one and what do ya think?

Norville,
I would be tempted to try one of those pistols if not for the five round magazines. My only rimfire handgun shooting disipline is NRA falling plates, where you are required to load six rounds in the magazine. Shame though, it looks like it might be a good deal for the money!!

I'd own one if I could find some left hand grips for it. They're a heck of a deal if they fit you!

I've had one of these for just under three years and it's the gun I shoot the most.  It ROCKS!  I shoot in a smallbore pistol league pretty much each week, and I've never had a jam or failure to fire.  It is an EXTREMELY accurate pistol, on par with some high dollar european guns.  The trigger length of pull, weight and break are all adjustable without taking the gun apart (well, you have to take the grips off for one adjustment, but not the others).

The best thing about the IZM 35M is that the axis of the bore is extremely low to the hand, almost eliminating muzzle flip.  It's amazing how well this works.  For timed and rapid fire, this really helps.  Also, the magazines actually take 6 rounds.  Also, you could chamber a round and then insert a fully loaded 5 rounder.

Parts aren't a problem, the gun is currently imported by EAA.  Also, the gun comes with a complete change of springs (which I haven't needed), a punch, firing pin and some other parts that escape memory.

The only issue I've had with the pistol is when I first got it my grip wouldn't fully depress the grip safety (required for importation).  I had a heck of a time figuring out to move my hand up 1/16 of an inch.  While initially annoying, I haven't noticed it since the first day I got it.  Besides, the grip safety just reinforces good grip stance.

The grips on the gun are obviously not high dollar custom grips usually associated with target pistols like these.  Since they wrap around the hand, be prepared to get out a file and fit it to your hand.  It's deliberately made oversize so that normal American adult hands have enough wood to play with in this respect.

When I got this pistol, I stopped shooting my Ruger Mk II bull barrel with a Volquartsen trigger and grips.  My scores went up 15 points.  I can't say enough good things about this gun for its price point.

John,
I don't know if it's a fluke or not, your mags holding 6 rds. In NRA falling plates you must load 6 in the mag! The 5 and 1 drill is not an option. I need to locate a dealer in my area and get my hands on one. I think I'll do a search. Thanks for your input.

Savage;

You can have your local FFL order them through a couple of sources, EAA or a couple of the major distributers.  Champion's Choice also has them.  One thing that I've read about on the net is that some early guns imported had trouble with doubling.  THe issue was chambers too tight/not long enough causing the bolt to fire the round.  If this happens, and like I said, it's supposed to be fixed, the importer will fix it for free.  There are several threads about this on targettalk.  This is just something to be aware of in case you find a used pistol.  I've never seen this myself, and my gun is an early one, but apparently it has happened  a few times.

John,
Thanks for the "Heads Up" on the potiental problem. I have a couple of dealers in my area. Hopefully they'll have one in stock that I can get my hands on. I'd buy one in a minute if I knew the mags would hold six rds!

Savage;

I was shooting this evening and confirmed that the magazines hold 6 rounds each.
