A good day
« on: November 17, 2007, 03:16:11 PM »
This had to be one of my favorite days afield that I can remember.

7:30am - After lots of shooting nearby, a buck peels off of a fleeing group and walks by 282 yds away.  I'm set up perfect for the shot, but hesitate as he appears to be on track to pass at 240 yds.  A second later I realize this is stupid as I have practiced for that shot, and sure enough he spooks and takes off.  Lesson learned, if you're going to spend the time practicing you have to believe in your abilities!

Most of the morning went by with a TON of shooting to the south, but no deer in sight.  I later learned that I was 500-600 yds too far north on the property and there was plenty of action further south.

9:30am - After a few does ran by at full speed at long range I decided it was a bad spot and still-hunted south.  I eventually saw a buck appear out of a ditch 400 yds away, then go back down and never emerge.  Hunting him would take a 300-400yd crawl across open corn stubble.  I contemplated the effort...

10:00am - Go big or go home, I started across the field on by belly.

11:00am - Reached the ditch as 3 does approached and crossed down from me.  Not knowing if the buck stayed put I went for the sure thing, crossed the ditch, and set up on the first doe.

11:05am - BANG-flop -- 209 yards.  The remaining two milled around, so I reloaded prone on my back and set up on the remaining adult doe.
11:07am - BANG-flop -- 180 yards.  I let the yearling go and reloaded.

I figured any deer in the ditch must be gone with the shooting as I was only about 80 yards from where I saw the buck.  I decided it was worth a look after all that crawling, so I cranked the scope down to low power and snuck down.  A very nice 8-pt launched out of the grass at my feet, and I found him in the scope at under 30 yards (no small feat at 3.5X running!!).

11:10am - Not a flop, but he went down and I quickly brought my pistol to bear on him as another half dozen does from his harem scattered.  Then I went to locate my other 2 deer.

11:20am - After returning to the same spot from finding the other deer, I see 2 does back across the field where my crawl began. They ranged 302 yards as I sat up, but jogged further down before I could shoot.  I re-ranged the biggest at 338 yards, and cranked 4 MOA more into the scope.

11:22am - BANG-flop to fill my last tag about 20 minutes after the first shot.

The buck is probably the 2nd best I've ever taken, and the first two does were quite large.  The last was average; the freezers will be crammed this year.

The best part is there was a guy watching all this from his treestand 300 yards away.  He waited by my truck for nearly an hour to find out how the heck I had done that (no rifles here and I was hunting on a game warden's property). :D

Congratulations Andy! That is probably why there are so many deer on that property, because it is owned by a Game Warden. Nobody gonna be trespassing or poaching around there.

I have only seen small bucks, does and fawns the past three days. I will wait until the muzzleloader season or late antlerless season to fill my antlerless tag. Just wish I could find Mr. Big soon. I did take a nice 8 point last Sunday evening with the Hoyt UltraTec.

That is a lot of work, taking care of 4 deer all at one time. I have had to do 3 before, and that was a lot like work.

They still have their trespassing problems, believe it or not...

I was hoping for Mr. Big too, my sister and brother-in-law went out to reset my game camera a couple weeks ago and saw a 12+ pt 24-in spread monster very close to where this all happened.  A 16-pt was found dead a half mile south due to a local deer illness too.  I found the largest deer track I've ever seen on that property, this was my first year there so I am already looking forward to bow season next year.

If you can spend the time out there hopefully you'll get your shot.  This weekend was all I was going to get this year with new responsibilities as Daddy so I wasn't going to be too picky.

Good luck with the rest of your season.

110gr FFg 777 and a 200gr Shockwave

100 yds - 0
200 yds - 6 MOA
300 yds - 15 MOA
400 yds - 27 MOA
I have a tactical-style scope with target turrets so I can hold dead-on with just a few seconds to adjust.

Wow, what a day.

About 8 years ago I put 2 down in 2 minutes at 215 and 200 yards and thought that was great but you da man on this one. Congratulations on a fine day.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.

when I get more than one deer- alll we can eat, I have ir butchered into ground meat and donate it to the local Hungar Coalition.
It sure makes the holidays better for the less fortunate.

Works especially well for those tough bucks

I feed a lot of people with the deer I shoot, my parents have dietary restrictions that really limit beef intake and venison is an excellent low-fat substitute.

I'm too busy to process them myself and with processing in the $70-$80 range around here I can't afford to give it away unfortunately.  Many years I do give away unprocessed deer to families that can use the meat though.

Andy I appreciate that you are a hard working hunter, and that you spend a lot of time at the range.
At 338 yards you are making about a 20 inch group.
Isn't that a little far to be shooting at deer?
You could just as easily make a gut shot as a lung shot at that distance.

Where are you coming up with a 20 inch group?  I have a target with two 5-inch groups on it at 400 yards, shot in much heavier wind than I would EVER take a shot at a deer in and the day I shot this deer I had 2-3 mph crosswind.  I shot this target in bad conditions on purpose to test myself and I passed.  And this was off a bench and I shoot better off my bipod like I do in the field as it holds the gun much tighter with my body in the prone position.

No, I could not just as easily make a gut shot.  At my 400 yd range session 10 days or so before the season every bullet hit within the vital zone, as did the shot that dropped that deer.  And 338 yds is a lot easier shot than 400.

I burned 2 full lbs of 777 in the month and a half leading up to this hunt.  I am better equipped to shoot 338 yards than the average hunter at 100.

Each and every deer I have shot at 150 yards or further has been a good vitals shot.  Over the past 5 or 6 years this has been around 15-18 deer.

Ethical shooting distance is an individual matter.  I put the work into the gun and practice necessary to support the shot and picked one in conditions that supported success.

Please explain to me how you determined I was not capable of taking this shot?

The most questionable shot I made that day was the very close range shot at the buck, which was running...not the 338 yarder.

You  say you get 15 MOA at 300 yards.
OK, 1 MOA at 300 yards is a 3 inch group, right?

What size group do you mean when you say "15 MOA."

I see, you were confusing my trajectory chart with group size.  Those were my drops in MOA, not group size.  I get MOA groups out to 400 yds on a calm day, and as I described I was able to shoot 2 5-inch groups on a day with a gusty 10-20 mph variable crosswind.

If I was getting 15 MOA groups at 300 yds that would be like 40 inch groups, and you would be right and I would be an idiot. :D

OK, I see, I have never seen the drops characterized in that fashion.
Andy I know you to be a diligent hunter who spends lots of time at the range, I should have asked for a clarification before I insulted you.
Sorry.

No hard feelings, I should have clarified the misunderstanding too.  I half expected criticism from some avenue for that shooting so I reacted a bit.

Good hunting.
