In war collage they try to tell you the difference.
A main Battle rifle consist of a larger caliber , limited to the amount of rounds a man can carry ,and the weight is a factor
Generally an emplacement weapon , with a lot of knock down ,accurate , and when a fire zone is cleared it kills anything in that zone.
Assault rifle on the other hand ,is lighter ,and can carry a lot more rounds being in a sub caliber.
This is carried by the poor SOB that has to breech the fire zone, and will need to do close in combat.
Or any OPs where it has to be carried long distances ,for fast attacks ,thus its name ,Assault.
Just what we were told.
In this time i Command ,That you take the Secular to Jerusalem .
There you rid the Holy City of the Scourge of Islam , Make the streets run red with the Blood of those who wish to wash Israel and Christianity from the face of the Earth.

Phalanx. Your language was nicer than the way it was put to us but the same thing was implied.
Effective killing range is the main separating factor. Afghanistan is showing the difference now with soldiers requesting
M14's that have enough range to kill the enemy. The little 5.56 just can't cut it at distance.
The term started in Germany with Hitler when he christened the 7.92x33 MP series of rifles as "Sturm Gewehr"
or Storm Gun. Storm meaning Assault... Battle Rifle was coined earlier in the Boer War I am pretty sure to differentiate
between Long rifles and the carbines that were carried by the Commandos on horseback. The battle rifle was again the stand off
weapon to kill at a distance while the carbine was for up close and personal. The Boers used multiple weapons so the term would have to have been applied loosely
Vir prudens non contra ventum mingit
"A wise man does not pee against the wind".

let me see, I have owned

  Mini-14
  M1A
  M1 Garand
  L1A1
  4 different AR-15s

of those, I kept...................one AR-15, plus the parts to build a light barreled AR-15 and a light barreled CAR-15

of the 7.62s I have owned, I pick the L1A1 by far.

no shame. the L1A1 (FN-FAL) would have been our rifle except for the militaries Not Invented Here attitude. Plus it was not wood one end to the other like a PROPER rifle.

Yes, I pick the L1A1 without reservation.

i like the M-1A  more , but that's what makes the world go round . and yes i have shot both . I like wood , always better to lay one cheek on warm walnut over cold plastic or metal any day .
Whats wrong with a proper rifle ? In a real situation it may become painfully clear that 30-40 round mags and pistol grips make it difficult to keep ones head low and shoot from a prone position . Keep in mind you may be alone with out the benefit of cover fire and actually have to aim not spray and pray .

spray and pray is just loud suicide. regardless of WHAT you shoot, only aimed fire is effective. While the L1A1 may be many things, a spray and pray utensil it is not.

regarding 'proper rifle', it didn't look like an M1 Garand. and what did these same folks pick to replace the M14?, why the totally wood-less M16. no logic there at all.

go prone, assume a shooting position with your rifle, aim at a target. you cannot get any lower with an M1A than an L1A1. seems to me they each use a 20 rd box magazine sticking out the bottom.

I got me 3 FAL's and they are a hoot!  My favorite is an L1A1.  Purdy wood and shoots real good!   ;D  Sending an Argie kit I bought years ago off to be put together on an Imbel upper.  However, I still would choose my M-16 (AR) A1 for my "go to when the SHTF gear"  like I said long ago in this thread.

my M1-A came with 10 round mag's which work well as if you shoot more than 6 times from the same position at any force with return fire capability you will in fact draw more attention than you may be able to deal with ( as STATED IN CITIZEN SOLIDER ) . The point about the prone shooting was told to me by several men who had come back from V.N. they didn't care for the 30 round mags in the M-16 for that reason . It is hard to see past conventional wisdom until one has opportunity to discuss it with those who were there , done it and lived to buy the T-shirt . Alot of what people express here will work in some cases but we must ask if in fact they will work in most cases as if we do encounter a SHTF
day will we have what will work that day ?
It is fun to speculate but not come up short on judgment day !

40 rd AR mags and 10 rd M1A mags are not GI issue so including them in a discussion of going prone in viet nam is irrelevant. The issue mag for the M14 is 20 rds. For the M16 the original mag held 20 rds but our soldiers demanded a 30 because the AK47 held 30. Put a 20 in an AR while prone. You will find the magazine does not limit how low you can get. You still must raise the rifle to get the muzzle out of the dirt and on target.

I guess the men who were there and had the problems with the M-16's are not as smart as the people who shoot at the range ! Then they aren't masters of SPIN , they had to live or die with the Whiz kids choices ! Had a funny thought John Browning's son carried one of the first BAR's into battle and it was a gun still used in places today wonder what the Whiz kids would have selected if one of their kids had carried the first one into a real battle ?

The 10 round mag comes with the M-1A as Issued to the public thru. sales today . a choice between 2 - a 10 or 20 . So I believe it is a choice !

If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Shootall, you keep mixing apples and oranges. the GIs had NO choice with the M14, it had a 20 rd mag. What is available to civilians is irrelevent. Just as your inclusion of 40 rd M16 mags regarding going prone in VN. the GIs didn't have them. again you try to put civilian accessable mags in a govenment issue environment. now who is spinning?

and,of those on this thread who were there and did it, they pick the M16/AR15. perhaps their counsel should be paid heed!

i mentioned the 30 r mag not 40 . and the ? was my choice of battle rifle , by the way - how does an assault carbine become a full blown battle rifle ?  I mentioned what was related to me about the M-16 as part of why i don't care for them . no spin !
lets face it the smaller round in both the M-16 and 9mm hand gun have not been accepted by those who are in the know as well as it should have been . Both have had the ammo redesigned several times because of failure in the field . no spin .
least someone call it sour grapes , i admit i don't like the M-16/AR . had 2 just didn't like them ! those that do like them enjoy !

there you go. your words and gee, 40 rd mags.

Edelweiss opened the thread and included the M16 as one NOT his choice. His thread, his criteria.

and now YOU bring the 9mm pistol into a rifle thread to support your argument?!?! you give me a headache.

the M16 is not accepted by those in the know. says who? I noticed several in this thread that have been there/done that that pick it over 7.62 nato rifles.

excuse me for the 40 round mag . I STAND CORRECTED !
Inclusion does not make it a correct term .
And i did not say all found it wanting , S O M E did .
Who are you to determine how i support my argument .
If you like your AR enjoy , and if we ever get on the same range , I will set your targets for ya since they will be 1/2 the way to mine !
Take a a BC and relax does wonders for a headache !
