New Hornet

I got my new 22 Hornet this weekend. I love it! I put a Bushnell Banner 4-12X40mm
scope on it. I ordered some dies, brass, and bullets. I took the sights off of it right
away and plugged the holes. The wood has some interesting grain. I can't wait to
see how it shoots! I should have got one of these a long time ago.

I picked it up at Discount Gun in San Diego, Peoples Republik of Kalifornia. I think it's
pretty much luck of the draw as to what kind of wood you end up with. This Hornet
and my 223 bull barrel have some interesting grain in their stocks. I ordered a pallet
wood Monte Carlo set to replace the tupperware set on my Sportster that is pretty
plain Jane. It still looks better that the black plastic though. I'm really looking forward
to the trip to the range with this rifle!

I recently sent in for a Super Lite 22 Hornet (444 too) barrel. While the frame is there I am getting Cinnamon Lams butt stock/fore ends put on it too. So that will make it an Ultra Super lite??? I can't wait for it to get back and try it out. Every thing is in stock so it should not be too long...I hope. I definitely want a range report. I am always interested in what others find out. It gives a good starting point. I also have a Banner 4 X 12 that I probably will be putting on it.

Are any of you 22 Hornet shooters crimping or not. If you do crimp, do you have to trim the cases every time so that the dies do not have to be adjusted for each time a case is reloaded due to case stretch? In the past I have not crimped, but I am thinking about it.

Crimping?

I started out crimping all of my Hornet loads with a Lee Factory Crimp die. Mostly just out of habit I guess.
I spent some time trying different bullets with various loads of Lil'gun. Finally found my  best accuracy load with
Vmax 40 gr and 13.5 gr of Lil'gun. Max in the Hornady book is 13.8 gr. Max in the Hornady book is 13 gr.
I loaded up some without crimp. The cases are neck sized only with good neck tension. No differnce in accuracy or POI.
So, I don't crimp this load anymore.

on the crimping note, I usually see how that particular load or cartridge shoots without a crimp and if im not satisfied with the performance then i will crimp to see what i can get afterwards. Usually I see a little bit of an increase in accuracy. but i usually dont have to crimp em.

thats a nice looking stock.  I am curious...do you line up well with the scope even though that is not a raised comb stock?  Do you have to lift you cheek up off the stock to see through it?  I have a similar 22 hornet with that stock and was wondering if I would have to buy one of the raised comb stocks in order to effectively scope it? -

Stock comb height is a real personal thing, a bunch of us here prefer the low or straight comb stocks for use with scopes, I guess it just depends our face/head shapes.

Yea, I line up just fine with this straight comb stock.  I agree with Tim and others in that I
prefer a straight comb stock with a scope. Mainly because I have big fat head!

yeah you guys a probably right.  I guess I should just put my straight combs on my scoped 223 and see how I like it.  I suppose I'm kinda a fat head too!
