.22 Hornet Platform
« on: November 20, 2007, 05:02:36 AM »
What I'm about to ask is, I'm sure going to kick over a hornet's nest(no pun intended) but here we go any way. In the opinion of you all out there which would be the better platform for a .22 hornet, the Savage Model 40 with the Accu-Trigger or a Contender or Encore with the rifle stock and barrel?

Savage M40 is the better of the two.  The Savage is more accurate as you don't have fore end pressure problems when holding the rifle. The Savage is also much more shooter friendly to reload when using a bipod in prone position. I have the Contender carbine and will be making a change.

the savage is a great platform. i have one and it will shoot almost anything you feed it well. if you handload you can really make this gun sing. i also have one on an nef single shot that shoots well but pull for pull the savage will eat it for breakfast. id put my money on that it would do the same to a t/c.

I've got both, and I have to say I like my TC encore pro hunter better.
the TC has a slight edge on accuracy.

I have a Ruger and like it very much.  If I were to do it all over again I would have mounted a smaller scope on it.  in the 3-9X 38 or 40 class rather than the 6-18X 40 I did.  But I would go with the bolt action Savage of the two for varmint hunting as the bolt is easier to reload with a bi pod attached or off a bench.

.... hornet's nest(no pun intended) ...... platform for a .22 hornet......
bkraft, in all honesty, I cannot offer any advice but I can say the hornet is a great cartridge - all the best in your quest :)!  I have an Anschutz 1431/2 and I find it to be my 'go-to' rifle even to the extent of planning my hunts around it - it is not the most powerful cartridge around.  But with Lil'Gun, it delivers a very respectable punch!  (Using heavier bullets).  I know it is dynamite on feral goats.  I try to hunt with it because it is just so much fun to shoot!

Good shooting!

I find myself allways grabbing my Sav M40 for coyote calling. The gun drives tacks, with handloads using Lil Gun. It's a great gun for short range 200yds. or less varmit shooting. A pocket full of ammo will keep you shooting all day long! Ron

I haven't had a M40, and do have a Contender Carbine and H&R Topper (with Mannlicher stock).  Of the 2 that I have, I prefer the Contender, and will be listing the H&R in the H&R classifieds.

If I was buying new, I would go for the M40.  I have a Savage 11 with an accutrigger, and love it.  I would expect the M40 to have a better trigger than a H&R.

The M40 has the excellent accu-trigger. I went a little farther, and installed a rifle basix trigger. The accu-trigger was ok,but I didn't like the little blade sticking through the trigger itself (just a personal thing). Ron
