In 10" I too would go with the 357 Max. I have the 357/44 Bain and Davis and that is not to bad. The 44 Mag is a handful in the 10" tube. I also have a 445 SM in a 16" barrel and that is about all I can handle. I have yet to shoot the 375 JDJ in the 15" barrel.

I had a 10'' .357Max., and it wasn't the most pleasant thing to shoot with full power loads. If ya don't mind me asking, what are you planning to do with this gun? If it's going to be plinking, I'd probably go with the .357Max., as you could shoot .38's and .357's out of it, with alot less recoil, and cheaper to reload. And the .357Max can be reloaded to take just about everything but moose and bear.
You might get alittle better down range trajectory with the 30/30. But it won't be much.  gypsyman

Handi I'll make it 4 for 4 the 10" max is a great barrel. The 30/30 has limited use for production long range silhouette game but for hunting stick to the 14" 30/30 or 10" 357 max. Just my .02 worth. Jim

I'd go with the .357 Max. in 10".  As stated, you can always use .38's and .357's for fun or small-game shooting.

I've had both , a 10" octagon 3030 , and at present a 357 Max in 10 inch bull.  The 3030 was pretty intimidating , a lot of muzzle lift and flash , and with a 10" inch barrel it doesn't get the velocity needed for a lot of " 3030 bullets " . It never shot real well for me either, I finally got rid of it.....that was back in the late eighties.   This summer I got a 10 " bull in 357 max, it is nice to shoot.  The recoil is not bad , I shoot 180 gr XTPs over 296 , pushing about 1800 or a little over....they're a little hot.  As someone else said, you can use 357 Mag or 38 through it also for practice.  To answer your question....I'd go Max all the way.   good luck

I have a 14" .357 MAX Encore and dearly love it. I shoot 38 SPCL loads at a nearby local indoor range and the full load MAX at an outside range.

I also have a .30-30 Handi Rifle that I would hate to part with, so I have nothing at all against the .30-30, just think it would be a little much in a short barrel.

357 Maximum would be the best choice for a 10" barrel.

If it has to be 10", make it the .357 Max.

I have a 12 inch 357 max.  great shooting setup and a pleasure to shoot.  hardcast or xtp's in 180 gr are great medicine for whitetails.
