Want to get a New Gun

Doc retired Me today do to health trouble , to pay bills I had to sell most My guns. So I want to buy a New Gun to make up for some of the lose. I small game hunt alot ,Whitetail Deer season is only 15 days and unless I drive 3+ hrs. shotgun only . But now that I medically retired at 38yrs. old I may have the time to go up north to the rifle zone next year . This is what I am thinking buy a BC 45 70 or 45lc (if get to go to rifle zone where I hunt shots under 100 yrds. and will reload for what ever I get, just starting to reloadand will have? on that later)  then send frame in for 20ga USH ,16ga and 22hornet(unless I can find a versa 22lr barrel to squirrel hunt with, will down load the hornet to 22mag levels). Now there maybe a elk hunt out in Col. Uncle has 100 acres out there for Me to use any time I want with small cabin. He comes back almost every year with a elk shots never more the 150 yrds.  So Here is the ? I like the 45lc ( Dad has a old colt that someday I will get and have shot alot) if I load it heavy or rechamber to 454 will it give Me a clean kill at that max range with alot of practice next summer or should I just go 45lc whitetail deer then when I have the money get the 45 70 if the elk hunt happens.  ? Open to any thoughts Want a SB2 frame to start with so I can small game hunt and deer hunt in shotgun only area and add a muzzle loader if I get to do that in Dec. So what you think  ? Oh for My shooting don`t like the really hard hitting 12ga 3in slug from a light gun (can do but don`t like it ) savage 110 7mm rem mag is the biggest rifle 3 in group all day at 200 yrds. ,17 HMR ,sorry sold it small game the eating kind if I can see it  was on my plate , going to try 17M2 next year I hope unless the hornet works out have alot of time left this year to try .So where should I start ?

If you want 1 frame to do it all the you need to make sure it is a SB2 frame. To get one of those you need to order a center fire rifle. I do not think you will go wrong by ordering a 45-70 in standard length barrel. The 45-70 is very versatile. It can be loaded down to 45 LC and up stiff enough to take bear at shorter ranges. It is long enough to take deer/elk at up to 200 yards or so. Then send it in for your other barrels. The 20 USH is plenty for deer and the 16 will get your upland game duties done and a light water foul/turkey gun. You could make it a little more versatile by getting a 12 gauge with choke tubes instead of the 16.  A 22 Hornet will shoot out to 200 yards or so and it can be down loaded to 1800 - 2000 fps if needed/wanted. A 223 is very versatile too. It can be down loaded as well as a 22 Hornet and has longer range. just my 2 cents.

   I took a 125 lb. Russian boar this year with a Uberti 1800s' golden boy (lever action replica of the old Henry rifle) in 45 lc ..
  while it covered the 30 yards or so to the pig (winchester 225 grn, silver tip hollow point) it went throw the close side shoulder , lungs and heart and didnt break the far side rib where it was recovered , Upon gettin back i took the rifle and said ammo out for a better sight in  (75 -100 yrds)  and wasnt impressed by the accuracy and drop rate..
 So on that caliber if you dont get to reloading it right off the bat i would reccommend Buffalo Bore Ammo ... they hop that round up to 44 mag ballistics or better if i recall right .. But alas my reciever while much stronger then the original brass used in 1800s' is still brass
and not designed to handle those pressures .. i.e the reason i want a handi 45 lc to go along with both my Uberti rifel and bird head pistol .... So to sum up all that , if you went with the +P buffalo Bore ammo or reloaded it up and hotter ... I would think at the closer ranges that the 45 lc could do the deed....
 And as for the  45-70  ?       Well Hell  Its A 45=70 For Pete Sake !! lol

I have 5 one shot kills with a 45 LC model 94 Trapper. 2Whitetail 2muleys and a 380# black bear. Remember the 45 LC can be loaded to far exceed the old Trapdoor loads of the 45-70. I would not be concerned with weather a 45 LC can take game. That being said the 45-70 in a Handi can be loaded in either direction also and certainly has the power to take anything in the world. We could now argue the small/fast vs. big/slow thing that is a matter of preference anyway, as well as a never ending battle. So short version is I started out just the same as you, got rid of my expensive rifles and thought I would just get one Handi to do the job. I now have 8 of them and two more on the way. Nice plan...a couple things I would change though...I would go for either the 20 ga Topper Deluxe barrel or the 12 ga. This will give you a nice vent rib & choke tubes...My 12ga. Shot great and for a 1 gun set to cover all bases...would be my first choice...the 20ga...the second...Both would work...but the 12ga has a definate edge for payload if you ever hunt water fowl or turkey...Pick up a nice set of TD classic stock & forearm...and you'll have a great looking rig.The 20ga USH is a fine choice..and should serve you well...and with the right loads...fully capable of 150 yard kills on deer...I'm not much on using 22 for squirells or rabbits...so I would be utilizing the 12ga or 20 ga for that...I would opt for the BC barrel and trim it back 26-28" for Elk hunting(personal preference) and get a nice Ultra Fluted 223/243 for varmints...Then add a 270 or 30-06 barrel along the way...BTW...there are cast bullet loads avaiable in the Lyman 48th edition reloading manual...that should work good for light shooting...cast bullets from 1762fps...up to 2234fps...in the 223...

So much common sense, the new writers are not in my tune much. So I don't
subscribe to the regular gun magazines anymore. PS Magazine is the only one I get now since I am very much interested in precision shooting. Like the man said "only accurate rifles are interesting".

If I was in your shoes I go for a 7mm-08. You can buy effective factory ammo
and handload up to 175gr semi pointed bullets, tailor made to suit for whatever you hunt short or long range with little recoil. A simmilar round the 7x57 decimated the Elephants in South Africa when the African farmes considered the Elephants
varmints. Now there are no more Elephants in SA except in the Kruger National
Park..

I hear you Fred! I used to love reading Bob Milek's and Skeeter Skelton's articles in the gun magazines
back in the 80's. Guys like them are long gone now. Magazines now are mostly advertisements
and pretty pictures. It seems to me the writers in today's magazines are afraid to tell it like it is
for fear of being "cut off" from getting free stuff from the manufactures. They are more
like sock puppets than writers in my opinion. I don't waste my time reading their magazines
anymore. I get way more useful info on this site than I could ever get from all the magazines
put together.

Don't forget the black powder barrel, that will give you 2 more weeks of gun hunting, and all the yahoo city  shooters  are out of the woods. What part of the state are you from. The up north is only a Michigan thing.

I live in barry county close to Gunlake ,Hunt near Hastings , Michigan . Have been thingking about the muzzle loader but have a CVA hunter hawkins for now but if money is available would like to add 1. Really wanted a big bore ,but I have thought about the 7mm-08 and the 280 had a 7mm Rem Mag but never got to do anything more then shot paper with it so it was 1 of the first to go when things got tough. Went to the H&R web site I seen they have a stainless Handi in 223,243,270,30-06,and bull in22-250 . I like the stainless frame as a starting point ,thinking about ordering a 223 and going from there ,if the 223 don`t work out sell it or have it sent to Wayne for a rebore rechamber to 300 savage . I now the 300 savage is a good deer round but is it to light for Elk at 150yds. max ? I like to be different will handload for what ever I get and I do want 1 custom barrel , how about 375 win. or 375 JDJ for both deer and elk?
