Single shot pistol bullets 30-30 for deer???????
« on: November 21, 2007, 03:25:57 PM »
Ok I have a few , very few of the sp bullets left. I will be looking at something to replace them with by next year. Currently I am using 170 flat nose soft points with 3031 powder loaded 2 gns under max. I have been looking at some of the lighter hollow points with flat nose to use next year. What is the opinion on 125 to 135 gn flat nose hp designs. Do they open up well, and not just sail on through????

I have been shooting 125 grain Remington PSP in my .30-30 Handi for years and love them. Never taken a shot over 100 yards, but they work real well up to that range. Expand like they should and the deer don't go far.

I have tried the 125 gr bullets at the range and not in the woods yet.  I  have gotten goods results at 50 and 100 yds.

Would like to hear about field reports on this bullet, though.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

The Nosler 125gr BTs perform very similar to the discontinued single shot pistol bullets.

I've used the 150 flat points with mixed results; on a medium buck, it expanded well and had max internal damage at 40 yds, on a button buck at 70 yds quartering away it went in and out without any expansion.  Deer dropped on spot-only because it went through the heart and punctured both lungs.  This was with a Contender and 14" barrel.  This was factory Federal ammo bought at Wally world at end of last season; they discount at around 50% at end of season to get rid of excess stock.  It shoots a jagged hole at the range from a rest at 100 yds, and the price is right.  I'm currently reloading with 110 vmax for ground pig and prairie dogs; haven't shot any yet.

I second the use of 150 gn Nosler Bt's.  Have worked well on Deer, Bear, and Elk.

I've used the Sierra 125 FN HP designed for the 30-30 in a 30 cal Contender barrel for a small whitetail and it performed well, chest shot, never recovered the bullet but it looked like it expanded well and must have held together because I didn't find any pieces of the jacket. This load was doing 2450fps so it's about like 30-30 speed.
