Model 7 .308
« on: November 23, 2007, 04:23:57 PM »
I have run into a fellow with a Model 7 stainless steel / synthetic stock chambered in .308 and comes with a Leopold VXII scope.
I already have a Model 700 in 35 Whelen.
Is it better to find a .308 in a 22" or longer barrel or will the 20" suffice for 250 yard deer size targets?
I have seen the term "Short Action 700", is this the model 7 or is there a 700 action that is short?

Thanks,

RB

I own one like that but mine has the Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8 scope on it.

The Model 7 is basically a shorter than short action Model 700. Just as the short action M700 is shorter than the standard M700 the M7 is a bit shorter yet. Otherwise they are pretty much the same rifle. The 20" barrel is plenty for 250 yard shooting with it. Mine is quite accurate with the only load I've tried in it so far and that's the Remington Core-loct factory 150s. That's the first thing I tried and it liked that load very well so I've looked no further for this season but likely will come warm weather again.

I have a Winchester model 88 in 308 Win.  It has a 20 inch barrel and I don't think 250 yards is asking to much of it at all.  I've shot it at 200 yards many times and it groups quite well.  My rifle also likes 150 gr. Core Lokts.  Take it to the range so you know where the point of impact is going to be at all the ranges you're going to be shooting at and you'll be fine.    ;)

The M just means Matte finish. I like it best and do buy it when possible but it's really not necessary for the base to work. The 35, 35M and 35S are all the same base except for finish. Same with the 421. Finishes in order are gloss, matte, stainless but all will work just fine.
