tang sight on your muzzleloader?
« on: November 25, 2007, 07:36:36 PM »

Anyone ever tried a tang sight on their flintlock or percussion?  I have a Hawkin flintlock and have been toying with the idea of adding a tang sight to it for awhile.  I would like to experiment this winter and possibly try it out.  Was wondering if anyone out there has tried this and what your thoughts were?  At the moment I just have the original factory sights on the gun.  With my less-than-stellar eye sight I'd like a sight for improving my accuracy.  I also considered a rear peep sight, but haven't tried that either.  Let me know what you folks have tried and what you found that works for you.  Thanks.

Jeff

I have a Lyman 57 tang mounted peep on my Lyman Great Plains and I like it pretty well. With my 50 hunter barrel and some 460 conicals over 70gr of powder i shot a 75 yard 3 shot group of .28" on the first day I tried it. TC also makes a tang peep sight for their traditional style rifles. It certainly seems to help in the accuracy department.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.

Peep sights on ML guns go back to the days of matchlocks and are quite common on many original flint and cap lock guns. All my ML rifles have peep sights made like the originals.

I found a picture of one and saved it on another computer that I am going to put on my flinter, It was on a gun that was for sale on TOW site. It is really cool and looks more "period" than some of these others that you will see.
Anyway I will post the picture of it when I get to my other computer later today.

Here is the link to that sight I talked about

That probably isn't a hook breech rifle there is it? Would be a bit difficult to unmount.

It should work on ANY barrel as it is mounted ahead of the breach the way it looks to me, the rear screw that you see is for elevation.

TC makes or used to a peepsite for their guns.  I have one on my Renegade.  It is totally mounted on the tang so the hooked breech barrel separates just fine.  I can't get enough elevation on the peep for ranges over 100 yards though.  That's probably far enough for these old eyes anyway.  Any deer inside that range that's standing still for very long better lookout.  385 grains of lead will be on its way to him.

I have three Lyman 57 SML's on my guns. I can get way past 300 yards worth of elevation. All three of mine are sighted in out to 300 yards.  Ron

A friend of mine bought the Lyman Peep and tried it on his Lyman trade rifle. It worked good but he didn't like it or need it as he has young strong eyes.

I talked him out of it and installed it on my cabela's Hawken. I drilled out the peep hole to 1/8" and it made a world of difference for my old eyes. I could not see the open sights very well but with the peep, I can keep all my shots wher they need to be on deer out to about 80 yards. Much better than what I was able to see before.

I was going to try one of those tang mounted T/C sights but since this one was available, I went with it.
