Black powder in .500 S&W
« on: November 26, 2007, 01:07:53 AM »
Has anyone out there tried to make a BP cartridge out of the .500 S&W? I estimate it would take about 55 grains of powder under a cast bullet. I am thinking it would be a poor mans 50-70.

I was looking at a .500 cartridge yesterday and comparing it to some old BP rounds in my collection. My opinion is that it would make for some good experimentation.

The only problem I can see with that is bullet design. I've never seen any of the right size that carry nearly enough lube. I suppose you could use a grease cookie under the bullet or see if you could size down 50-70 bullets just enough to chamber easily. Other than that it should be just about ideal.
