Is this really necessary?

This could get expensive quick for those of us with multiple firearms to break in and have to pay by the hour for range fees!  :o

I have done it before and I won't say I'll NEVER do it again but I will say it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY I will ever do it again. I'd do it ONLY if I expected 1/2 MOA or better accuracy from the barrel once all was said and done. That for me means a small bore (6mm or under) that will have as a primary use target shooting or long range varmint hunting.

Even then I'm not convinced it really made any difference in accuracy and the main benefit I see from such a break in procedure is that it does tend to make the barrel foul less and clean easier/quicker.

I no longer do a barrel break in procedure on my guns.

I've done it on barrels and never saw anything remarkable from it. If the barrel is prone to fouling easily it needs to be hand lapped any way in my opinion. If you are talking about a match grade barrel it better not need it.     KN

I kinda think it's a waste of time as well.  I do use some JB compound and push a coated patch through 100 times....why...I don't know.  A bench rest shooter I know always did this with new barrels and he shot incredibly small groups.  That being said...I guess its more ritual than anything else.

Never did a barrel break in.

Never had an accuracy problem.

Barrels don't need breaking in. They sometimes need the finishing work the factory did not do, and some people call that "breaking in".

I'm with GB and the rest on this one...

I am a hunter, not a benchrest competitor. The most I do is to clean a new rifle and scrub the bore with a bit of Happich Simi-chrome..

   Works for me !
