Deer?? No Steer
« on: November 26, 2007, 05:16:37 AM »
A few days ago, here in Northern LaSalle County, Illinois, a bow hunter thought he'd dropped a deer.  At least from his tree stand it looked like a deer.  Ended up being the farmer's steer.  Bad news  but gets worse.  The hunter panicked and took off.  After two days he turned himself in to the sheriff. Had to pay the farmer $1,500 for the steer and the shooter is now charged with a Class 4 Felony.  The radio report says a Class 4 Felony but could be just a Class 4 Felony Misdemeanor.   FYI

I find it hard to believe he didn't know it was a steer and not a deer. I know people make mistakes on stand but that's a stretch. Maybe if it was a calf and the light was low, then again he shouldn't have shot if he wasn't sure of his target.

Oh @?%$, that stinks. I come from those parts, born in Pontiac IL and lived in Streator IL (Lasalle county) 1/2 my life. I had a friend riding down the RR tracks there in Streator on his ATV and hit a small deer and killed it. He went back to his uncles house and got a knife and went back to field dress it. While field dressing it some people nearby seen him and freaked out saying it was their pet. They called the cops and he was arrested for poaching all because he didn't report it when he initially hit the deer like he should have done.
I have to agree with Jim, there's a big difference between a deer and a steer
