button buck or not ?
« on: November 26, 2007, 08:51:22 AM »
The Saturday after thanksgiving , we were getting lunch between deer drives .
This 20 something guy comes in and and wants to register a deer , the lady at the counter gets the book out and asked - buck or doe ?
the guy goes not sure ! the lady asked button buck to which the guy goes how do ya tell ?
after the lady described a doe and a button buck in vivid detail she gave up and walked out to see for herself !
to get a lic. he had to take a class ! to go thru. school he had to take classes that must have explained girls and guys !
by 20 years of age you would think he would have noticed girl deer are different !
oh well just passing it along to those who believed they had heard it all !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Well to throw a different light on the subject I hit a fawn once with my truck and it was during bow season I was on my way to go hunting. I cut its throat to finish killing it and I noticed it had nubbin horns on its head. I turned it over to clean it and no male equipment was to be seen. Yep it was a Doe fawn with nubbin horns. Since some does have been reported with horns I could see where some folks could get confused in that case.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

If you can't tell by looking at their heads, look at the other end.   ::)

People have to start some where, but I know what you mean. I have run into a few hunters that could use a little more field experience.

You have to remember, 16 hours is the length of classes here in Delaware. The information is gone over quickly and safety is the biggest item focused on.
On good thing about Delaware, we have a ton of classes people can take, from shooting shotguns, rifles, muzzleloaders, handguns and bows to deer hunting and turkey classes. We have a big hunter eduction program here and we encourage people to take as many classes as possible.

Some guys don't have fathers or people to teach them hunting, they hunt and go out and learn and do it on there own and learn as they go.

Even so, I thought there was at least some sort of sex ed classes in most schools.  Even without it though, at 20 something you would think he would have discovered the difference between innies and outies by now. ;D
