Does anyone have this sight? I just ordered one from Brownells. I was wondering about it working with the factory front sight on my BC, or is a change necessary? I wanted to have a long range peep without too much modification. This seems to fit the bill. Hopefully I didn't just waste $125.   ???

Have ya got it yet? Have you read the Long Range Sight threads in the FAQs? All your questions are answered there, including some you aren't aware of yet!! ;D

Quick - I read the FAQ's and that's what helped me decide on that sight. I'm confused ??? about the front sight. It looks like the right way to go would be with the 17A/.404 but then the other guy says .494. The only thing I'm sure of is it needs to be lower I think. :-[ :-\ ??? I haven't decided if I will re-chamber or just throat the 45-70 but either way I will be shooting big bullets at moderate velocities at long ranges. - F50 Confused

That's one issue, depends on which sight you get, they don't put the same sight on all the time, the .494" will work for moderate long range, but the .404" is ideal. If you get the  .494", you can live with it, but if you get the .584", you're gonna be unhappy. Bernie uses the .404" to 800yds with the Smith sight, I don't have anywhere to shoot past 300yds, so I can't offer any long range advice.

The other issue you may have to deal with is the slider that comes on the sight may not be a peep, depends on where you got it and when it was sold if used. Brownell's shows it as a peep slider, just like Buffalo Arms did until I called em on it, they now show it as a notch slider, which is worthless to old eyes as a long range sight. :-\

Quick - Thanks you truly are the Guru of the Handi. OK now I've sucked up properly the Lyman front sight is available from Brownells(assuming it will have to be changed) as a model 17AHB - .404 or 17AML - .494 or 17AMI - .494. Which one works on the BC? Also, Brownells shows the sight as a peep slider so will have to wait on that issue. Still debating on the 45-70-90-100-110-120 issue. Just want to scare those Shilo boys a little when I kill their 600m ram with my BC.  :P :) - F50

You want the front sight with the 3/8" dovetail.  I added a couple links to the Long Range sights thread this morning, in one of em John Boy kills the 48"x82" steel Buffalo at 1000yds with his BC. ;)  He would be a good one to contact for long range advice if he doesn't chime in.

I have one of these on my Buffalo Classic plus a No 17 Lyman hooded sight up front. The jury is still out on the Buckhorn rear part for close in work but the ladder certainly does work well out to 200 yards.   I have not shot it farther than that.

this is how it looks on a BC!!

I added a couple links to the Long Range sights thread this morning,

Tim

Tim, thanks for the new links!.  After talking to a couple other people, I mounted my Tang sight direct to the wood this morning; I will try it this afternoon if I am lucky. I left the rear sight on for a reference, then left the rifle outside for while (40 deg lower temp difference). The tang sight did not move!  I am not worried about the holes in the stock since I am going to use this sight even if I have to change the way I mount it.

I never thought about those inserts someone pointed out in one of those new links!  I have a kit of those out in the garage. The type I have compress into the hole sort of like a pop rivet. I have used them on many different applications into wood and aluminum with no failures. In fact, I use them to hold a large plastic case onto the back of my BMW motorcycle with no problems. I need to see what sizes threads I have in stock.
