loading a CVA with loose powder and bullet
« on: November 26, 2007, 12:15:26 PM »
I have a CVA 50 cal Optima and have been using 100 grains of 777 pellets and 295 grain  powerpoints.

I would like to improve the rifles accuracy by loafing 777 loose powder and non- powerpoints..

What powder measure and bullets would you suggest?
will I have to patch the bullets?

any guidence you care to send will be appreciated

thanks

My best advice to you is, try different bullets and powder charges, find out what your gun likes. There is not a magical recipe. It takes time and a lot of shooting to see what your gun likes. Plus it is a lot of fun shooting a lot.

Try 70, then 80, and then 90 grains of 777 with the 250 Shockwave. You can kill deer all day with 70 grains of powder.
The Shockwave comes with plastic sabots. You only use patches on round balls, and your rifle will not shoot round balls well.
You also could try the 200 Shockwave, same powder charges.
Aim small don't miss.

My son shoots a 50cal Optima and it does well with the 250 Shockwave over 80 to 100 grains of powder, 777 or Pyro P. The 777 does get a bit of crud ring but if you swab between shots its not to bad. Good luck with it.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.
