need help with safety on model 70
« on: November 26, 2007, 05:25:07 PM »
Anybody know of a source for either bolt work?or maybe I just need a new safety, or shroud. Dang safety wont function. Other than this the rifle functions fine. I disassembled and cleaned the bolt and when I had it apart the safety engaged, but as soon as I put it back in the rifle and fire it, it won't re-engage. And no This is not a problem where I took it apart and can't get it back together. I only say that because on reading this post thats exactly what bit sounds like. Thanks

First you do understand the safety is designed to engage only when the action is cocked? A model 70 safety is a cam that acts against a notch in the cocking piece. When applied it moves the entire striker assembly to the rear just a bit. If the striker assembly is not screwed in far enough it will not work as the cocking cam will not be retracted far enough to allow the safety cam into the notch. Did the rifle work properly before dis-assembly? Does it cock and fire OK? With the striker lowered is the firing pin protrusion correct? Has the trigger been lightened? We're going to need a bit more info. I've included a link to parts blow up below.

Yes I undrstand that. In fact yes to all your questions, except the one about trigger lightening. I just don't know about that. I don't think so , my dad gave the rifle to me, and I don't think he would mess with it. Thats not to sy my younger brother didn't fool with it. As I said everything seems to work fine except the safety won't engage.

Do you know how to strip the bolt,,, the striker assembly? Remove the bolt from the action and hook the sear on the bottom of the cocking piece over a metal plate or the like held in a vise. As you retract the striker try to move the safety. If there is a problem with the striker not being cocked far enough to the rear the safety should work once the striker is withdrawn the correct length. Take the action out of the wood and assure the trigger is correctly installed and functioning smoothly. Of course you've checked that the striker assembly was screwed into the bolt body completely, correct? If the safety works when the striker is pulled slightly to the rear then the sear engagement height is the problem and it will likely require a gunsmith's attention.. These parts were always listed as restricted by Winchester and usually required a trip to Winchester to get them replaced. It can be fixed by a knowledgeable gunsmith by slightly moving the safety notch on the striker to the rear.. If the safety is jammed either by rust or broken parts it will also require a gunsmith..unless you are familiar with striker assembly take down.. Just see if the safety will work out of the bolt and go from there. Also be sure to remove the metal work and check to see the trigger is functioning correctly..
