I wish i had a dollar for every animal that was shot at, and never recovered, BUT the shooter knew "exactly" where they had hit it!!!

When someone says that, it get's pretty hard to believe any other detail they report too...

if you hit it where you aimed and it gets away , doesn't speak highly of your ability to place your shot where it will do the most good now does it ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Can you prove it didnt? ::)

No...I can't...but...I am not the one stating it did...Others have though...Normally...if you are stating an opinion...a person says it is an opinion...not a fact..Reading thru several post...this was said...

Quote
It really wasn't a fact of not being able to find the deer that night (the 9 point). The guy who did the shooting hasn't hunted much for deer and when the deer ran off he assumed he missed it.He came back to the camp and told me that he missed.  It wasn't until the next morning that he saw blood while hunting on the same stand.

Now...you and I both know a few things Cole...We both have shot more than just a few animals in our lives...What is this telling you...I know what it is telling me...He didn't know where he hit the deer...He was an inexperienced hunter...not 1 time...but 2 times...from the same stand...

Quote
The second day we went hunting I got a shot at two deer at around 450 yards. I hit the first one good and she went into the woods and dropped. I took a shot on the second one, but she turned at the last second and I barely grazed her back end...I know this because she came out again the next morning on another stand inside the woods close to where I took the first shot at...this time I didn't miss and dropped her in her tracks. The same evening my buddy took a shot on a doe. He messed up and hit it in the shoulder. I went into the field to track it down...there was fragments of bone that appeared to have come from the shoulder and a pretty good blood trail. I followed the blood trail into the woods, but the further we went the blood got further and further apart between spots. Eventually the blood trail went to about every 15 feet, then every 30 feet, and then was non-existent. We never found the second deer he shot.

If a shoulder is blown out enough to leave chunks of bone to give up lung blood...that deer won't travel far unless pushed hard...Another possibility...Your not a beginner hunter...you should know this...Is the lungs the only place you can get oxygenated blood from that shows up while tracking? Is the shoulder the only place on a deer you can get bone fragments from a bad hit?

Mac

Mac, it is painfully obvious to any of us that have been around awhile that if the Deer was shot in the shoulder, the outcome would be as you stated.
We all know that. Years ago, I was a member of a big club in S. AR. & more than once I was asked to help track a wounded Deer shot by a "beginner" or inexperienced hunter. They usually think they made a good shot regardless. The situation described with pieces of bone, blood &
the blood getting less & less sounds like some of these I tracked, which turns out to be leg shots. It would not surprise me if a three legged Deer
doesn't show up in the area soon.

So we have lack of experience or ignorance of how Deer react to being shot as being the reason for loss number 1 & I would bet a leg shot Deer
for loss number 2. Of course this could have happened with other bullets as well. Why would this nonsense affect the choices of bullets that I would
make?

I think the title of the thread is wrong. It should be POOR SHOOTING & IGNORANCE RULED OUR HUNT.

Rod...that's exactly my point...I've helped track deer that gave the similar signs...I don't know for sure this was what happened...and I have my doubts that particular hunter does either...but it is more logical to me to accept this alternative... than having out right bullet failure from it..based on the information that was given...........

How Ever...my questions still go unanswered........The questions to any one believing this was a bullet failure were...

1) Given the facts exactly as he has given them...How does what he described constitute a bullet failure to you...

2)When is an assumption supposed to be taken as proof ?   More importantly...WHY ?

I really would like to know why some feel this was a bullet failure...

Got a call yesterday. Grandfather went up to his turnip patch to get some more greens and saw the buzzards flying. Went and checked it and found the doe. Their was an entrance wound in the shoulder area, but no exit.

Now we don't have to speculate anymore... :P

Surprised you did not report this yesterday, but I understand the importance of reporting this after reading the last couple of posts.

I noticed the first Deer was eaten the very first night. I guess the Coyotes just did not want this one.

Interesting also that after a week of Buzzards eating on the Deer that the bullet hole could still be seen, I suppose that they save the bullet hole are for last.

Strange goings on in regard to BT's I guess.

Happy Holidays

If'n he'd been shootin' some of those magic Barnes bullets, it'd kilt the deer, gutted it, skint it and cooked a pot of them greens with some of the back strap cut up in it.  Mmmmmm good. Don't be scared to put a couple of them jalapenoes in there.  :o

Nothing magic about them, they just work like "a forgiving bullet with controlled expansion" should.Sounds like a good recipe,I have everything but the jalapenos, may give it a try. ::)

Yea, I have to carry hot sauce when I travel sometimes, esp. when North of MD line.

Lots of good bullets out there, & obviously some need all the help they can get when shooting big, bad Does & baby Antelope.

Yup...the hot sauce probably would be a good idea since I heard you have to add a whole bunch of spices to it any way...that's because it is the only way of getting rid that taste in them that's left over after having the armor plating removed... ::)

;D  Used my 96 Sweed on 2 deer this year. First was a 13 year old's first one. He used the Sweed loaded with 120 gn Speer spitzer soft points. The shot was not far but placement of the bullet was great . Slightly quartering away , he put it right behind the foreleg angling towards the off leg . low enough to bust the heart  Deer went about 50 - 60 feet if that.

2nd deer  shot by me with the mauser at around 90 to 95 yds. Deer was broadside facing left. The bullet went in right behind the leg about 12 way down the side , it to busted the heart ( stand is 40 ft high pluse the rise to the stand about another 30 ft ) Turned and ran across the creek and tried to go up the bank but died and fell about 5 ft from last years kill.

Bullet was a 100 gn. balistic tip , would I use them again , season is 17 of Dec to jan . And I have 4 of them left . That is enough for 4 more kills . Yes I will use balistic tipson deer. They kill as good as anything else you all can come up with.

"Lots of good bullets out there, & obviously some need all the help they can get when shooting big, bad Does & baby Antelope"

Another 4 year old chimes in,Nomo we shoot doe/fawn antelope and mule deer to keep the herds in check, not to mention they are the best meat we get all year, you got a problem with that or is that the best playground insult you can come up with, you sound just like a PETA spokesman.Im pretty sure i put more game in the freezer every year than you do in 5,I have no problem filling the freezer with antlerless tags, and Im going to use the best bullet I can get whether its a fawn or the big buck or the elk I kill every season.Oh yhe I killed a calf elk this year as well, got a problem with that?

If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!......I'm not in your shoes...and you do what you have to do I guess...for the sake of the herd...but I dam sure wouldn't go bragging about it...and have that as my signature..Killing fawns of any kind isn't fair chase...

FAIR CHASE STATEMENT
FAIR CHASE, as defined by the Boone and Crockett Club, is the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper advantage over such animals.

Oh...that's right...you do & say what you want...just as you hunt what you want...I believe there is a word for this...and I bet some folks at PETA would love to use your statements for no good...

Now that PETA has informed me that shooting antelope yearlings isnt fair chase ill stop..NOT,you two should be the poster children for anti groups, your zumboisms are priceless.Your both so phony Im surprised you can live with yourselves.

"Killing fawns of any kind isn't fair chase..."  quite a few people would disagree with you Mac,though Im sure this is just another argument starter of yours to fill your endless free time.

"Oh...that's right...you do & say what you want...just as you hunt what you want...I believe there is a word for this...and I bet some folks at PETA would love to use your statements for no good..."
Damn right they would, along with my photo archive full of dead bucks, bulls, birds, bears and one FAWN,with a big crater in its shoulder where the bullet failed to penetrate. You two can carry on your smear campaign without me,Im tired of being called a liar, unethical and inept, just the kind of behavior we are coming to expect from you every time you post.Im going to hunting and I may even shoot a HEN,good lord maybe even a duck that was born last spring, what is wrong with me?Im done with this thread but Ill keep an eye open for all the other reports of BT failures so I can read your insults and lies.

Gentlemen –

This thread has degenerated into name calling and personal attack, which I will not tolerate as Moderator.  These will stop NOW or I will lock the thread and delete any subsequent posts that are guilty of such behavior.

In addition, this thread has gone far afield of the original direction into the area of ethics.  If you would like to continue your discussion on hunting ethics please feel to do so, although unless it has something specific to do with Medium Bores I suggest you do so on the “Hunting and Shooting General Discussion“ forum.  This is not the place.
