Aluminum Vs Carbon
« on: November 27, 2007, 09:51:18 AM »
If you have a metal detector then the aluminum arrows when lost can be found easier. It is much easier for a metal detector to pick up on the whole shaft that is made of aluminum then to try to pick up just the fieldpoint/ broadhead of a carbon arrow, especially when the point is in the ground.  By the way you can get a metal detector from walmart for $50. Its a bare bones Bounty Hunter model made for kids/ adults that are not too serious/ just getting into that hobby but it works well enough for finding arrows. It took me a moment to learn to use it but the next time will be easier.

They work good if you have an idea where to start to look. I shoot from the ground so in a hunting situation if the arrow does not hit a tree square and glances off into the wide blue yonder I am not going to take the time to look I have done that before with neg results as the arrow could be anywhere and I have an expensive Garrett so it is not the detector but figureing out approx where that arrow went. I do agree they do help and I have used mine at the archery range with good results as that is open.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I prefer carbons and roll my own. So finding the odd one I do lose would rob me of an excuse to make some more. Besides I'm have to lose at least 10 arrows to pay for the cheapest metal detector...which it  may or may not find. To find mine so far, I've just looked on the off side of where the deer was standing. ;D

Could I rephrase this question?

What is the advantage of one over the other?  I realize that the carbon bolt is lighter and may excellerate at a faster fps, but is it worth the extra cash???

Mostly cost! Alum bolts are less expensive. I tried alum. bolts in my Parker Safari Mag (150 lb. pull) and shot two with 125 gr. field points. They bent comming out of the cross bow,and flew like cork screws through the air towards the target! :o They were 2219 shafts,so I called Parker, and a rep said not to shoot them out of the X-bow. I really like the carbon bolts better. They are either good,or junk after shooting(read no slightly bent bolts, flying off target).
