What is This Part? Rem 870 Shotgun
« on: November 27, 2007, 01:34:21 PM »
Does anybody know what this part is?

I found this in with some Remington 870 12ga parts from about 30 years ago.  If memory serves (and it might not), the 870 was being cleaned and this was left over.  It can't be too vital, cause the 870 has been used for skeet and deer hunting since then with no problems.

It's not the magazine spring retainer, because the spring retainer is about 3/4" in diameter.  The unidentified part is about 1 1/2" in diameter, the lip is about 3/8" deep, and the lip does not go all the way around the piece.  The lip ends about 1/4" before those little 'horns' on the bottom.

Sorry about the picture - my digital camera can't do much better.

The old 878 Remington auto, had a ring called a forend ring that looked similar, but not exactly, to what you have, but that was an auto-loading gun.  The 870 has what is called a forend tube nut, which doesn't look like what you have.  Just my thoughts.

I just stripped mine down and there is nothing on it that likes like that. Only guess i have would be that it went on after the barrel was replaced and before the barrel nut was screwed on. The edge would go down the mag tube which would explain the edge stopping for the barrel mount. Rounded part to barrel. Looks like it would fit there anyway.

That looks like the gas cylinder collar from a Remington 11-87.

It probably made it to a parts box, because they're removed when a Hastings RS barrel is installed on those actions, as those barrels are not gas compensating.

Hey...thanks for the answer(s)!!!

I've got an 11-87, with a rifled slug barrel.  This must be from the automatic 11-87!  You've put my mind at ease.

And I win the bet with my brother...he said it was a 1960's Yugoslavian Intra-Uterine-Device.   ;D  :o
