Magnum Research Lone Eagle .308 Caliber
« on: November 27, 2007, 07:51:20 PM »
I just purchased a Magnum Research Lone Eagle in .308 caliber.

I was curious if anyone has used this pistol for deer hunting and what the results were.

Suggestions, tips, tricks, or traps to watch out for with this gun ?

Thanks!
Fred

Hello Fred, I had a Lone Eagle in 308 Win and shot one deer with it and several groundhogs.
I reloaded for mine and could get 150's to 2600 and 125's to 2800. The Lone Eagle has a very week extractor, if you experience extraction troubles then start using nickle cases and your extractor will work much better. I don't particularly like nickle plated brass but the Lone Eagle begs for it.
Another thing that was probably just the gun I had was that it didn't shoot boattail bullets as good as flatbase bullets, I should have recrowned the muzzle for this problem.
The trigger on the LE isn't great and there isn't alot you can do for it, but you can get used to it with practice.
I like the design so much that I sold my LE and bought a Competitor, it's like an updated version. It has an adjustable trigger, different stock options, cocks upon opening the action, and you can change barrels on the action.
The LE shoots great and balances excellent.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I have several Lone Eagle handguns. The first one I purchased when Magnum Research started handling them. It is in 308, stainless with the tank style muzzle break.
The trigger has plenty of creep, I pulled mine apart and polished the trigger parts and ended up with a 3.5# pull weight but the creep is there. With practice and reloads the gun is sub moa.
I have never tried plated brass but have found that the gun likes some brands of brass and hates Federal. I have a pre Magnum Research Lone Eagle marked Ordnance Technology SSP-86 that refuses to eject any shell fired or unfired. I have even polished the chamber but have not given up on it.
