Scope for 45/70

Looking for suggestions on a scope for the ole 45/70 handi.I have a scope on it now but the eye relief is not that great.I have seen threads discussing this in the past but i couldn't seem to locate them.

A Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32 is tough to beat. I paid $109 for my last one on sale.

The 2-7x32 Nikon Shotgun scope would be an excellent choice, I have a couple of em, one is on the .500 S&W Handi, they list it as 3.9"-.3.8" of eye relief and it has every bit of that.

Because of the recoil, I went and put a shotgun/ML scope on mine. It's a 2-7x32 BPS scope. And I have it sighted in at 50 yds. Works good enough for me.

I shoot #2 level loads in my 45/70 Handi and have never come close to getting popped with the Nikon.

Top loads in the 500S&W Handi are equal to Ruger level in the 45-70.  :o The worst case was it caught the bill of my baseball cap once and knock it off, but didn't touch me. ;) That was before I got tired of the abuse, not a problem anymore from the bench with the Lead Sled.

Abuse is an accurate term. I only shot 3 Ruger level loads before I decided they were too much for my shoulder.

I hear ya there, I shot the 700gr Ranger Ricks from the 500 at 1430fps, was real glad I had the Lead Sled, recoil was calculated at 42lbs IIRC, even with weight in the laminated stock it would have hurt. :-\

i have shot that load in my 500 and i don't want anyone to video that.....  No one likes to watch a whoopin' over and over.... ;D

The Banner's are great scopes, not as clear as the Nikon, but they have big power rings that make them not so easy to mount low, hammer mods or high rings are required, that's a 1½-4½x32 Banner in the pic. btw, that's not rust on the rifle, it's a photographic anomoly that I have no clue about! :-\

What do you think the minimum eye relief is with the Hornady leverrevolution amo?  Is 3" enough?

Welcome to GBO! I've not shot the Leverevolution ammo, but in general 3" would be real critcal, might work fine for some folks, not for others, 3½" would be a wise minimum. I suppose it would depend on whether you get the downloaded ammo, or the good stuff, they have two ratings on their 45-70 ammo depending on when it was made, one of em is 18XXfps, the other is 2050fps, the slower stuff would likely be fine, but the good stuff may be an issue.

Thanks for the suggestions I really like Nikon so when i get ready to get one thats probably what ill get.

While were on the topic of the 45/70 what kind of range can I expect to get is 200 yds too much?
I use Winchester 300 gr hollow points

Picked up the Nikon at BPS last night. Seems to fit the rifle really well.

 My present scope on my 1895,  with 300 gr Marlin loads will slightly tap me on the bridge of the nose, when I shoot at the bench if I am not careful.  After looking at the holes this load left in two deer this year I will probably be backing it off to trapdoor level but if I am again tempted to 'load her up' a scope with a little more eye relief would be welcome.:D

It is a great way to scope a hunting rifle.  I just scoped my .45-70, and have a Rem. 870 set up with a red dot mounted on the rib in scout fashion.  My first scout was an Ithaca 900 with a scope mounted on the rear sight base.  It works extremely well.

I mount a lot of 3-9 X 40 Bushnell Banner BP scopes on BC 45-70's and Handi's in 45-70, so far no complaints, you do have to use high or x-high rings to avoid the hammer though.
