scope ring use

does anyone else use 3 rings to mount a scope. i first did when mounting a scope to a handgun for a secure no movement attachment to my desert eagle 50 cal.
 it just sort of became habit i guess, but i really 'convinced' myself that two rings near the reciever  to anchor the scope and one out over the part of the rail thats unsupported. (see pic).
does anyone have reasons thats this is a bad idea, immaterial for a good idea ? you can tell me i'm nutz too

The only one I've ever done was on my 375H&H Encore Prohunter, but only because I had an extra ring, have never needed three so far with properly mounted scopes, that being either in lapped rings or Burris Signature rings. ;)

   As usual Tim is right on! You mostly see a 3 ring setup on hard kicking handguns because of the ring "slip" associated with firing a heavy caliber with only the resistance offered by wrist and arm. Its not so much that the rings slip forward, but that the gun moves back against the mass of the scope without the shoulder to slow it down. With a rifle, except in extreme cases (see 375H&H) the butt stock tucked tightly to the shoulder against a 2 handed grip lessens the effect.
   The only other major problem I see is that you may have trouble achieving the proper eye relief especially by using the extra ring on the receiver end.
    Also, especially if your using aluminum rings or an aluminum scope tube, concentricity is very important to avoid placing the scope under stress possibly bending or denting the tube. Lapping should take care of that however.

I see nothing wrong with it. To each his own. I have a buddy that has four rings on a 50 BMG. :o Dale

i should say, that i have simmons medium rings on my sportster and .243 ( three each )
and on my whelen, soon to be 45-70 bc, i have burris z rings. which actaully work better for the use of 3 because they are narrower somewhat.

please explain "lapping the rings"
