I kow this is not black powder but I am looking for an opinion. I am getting ready to sell some of my project guns, I'll never get to them. I was going to take a #5 RRB action and make it into a #5 sporting rifle in 30/40 Krag. The cost of doing this will be in the neighborhood of $700.00 plus the action and I'm into it for a grand. The more I think about it I would rather get a Highwall in 30/40 ready to go. An original is more then likely out of the question because of price, at least for me. Hence, I have been looking at the repos. I think the best bang for the buck would be the C. Sharps Highwall Sporting rifle. The others are over priced with the exception of the Uberti which is about $900.00 and is available 30/30. I emailed them to see if they would chamber one in 30/40. But still, I would rather pay a little more for an USA made rifle rather then an Italian made one. I would like to have anyones thoughts on this and has anyone heard anything, good or bad about C. You will get a nice rifle in the c-sharps. I was in the same boat. I got a c-sharps for the price of the ped-dixe sharps. Mine is the 75 model in 40/65. Wood is nice has some figure not plain. I bilt up 30/40 krag on a rb wiyh a sporter barrel good for hunting but too light for bench or plinking if useing factory ammo.

It depends on your definition of overpriced, but, you should also take a look at the Ballard High Walls, they are 100% copies of the original 1885 patent. The base model sells for $2050 with FET included, while the C-Sharps is around $1350 before FET. The FET will bring the C-Sharps up to about $1500. Both companies will chamber in 30-40 Krag, and both are using Badger barrels.

C-Sharps does make nice rifles, but between the C-Sharps and Ballards Ive seen, Id give the edge to the Ballard. They also have a greater list of options, and make a Thin Side action. Some of the options that C-Sharps is charging for are freebies with Ballard, such as barrel configurations, and barrel sights even (C-Sharps wants $85 for a set of buckhorns).

Ive got two Ballard High Wall Special Sporting Rifles, and have been very pleased with them. My only problem is now convincing my wife I need a Low Wall .22 to practice with.

Chuck: Ive been trying to convince Mr. Saffos about the benefits of a Ballard Hi Wall (AKA Ball-Wall). Of course, being a transplanted Texan living in California, he will not listen. Does that explain it?

Actually, if he would open up that Smithsonian-like closet of his & sell off some of the firearms that he has not shot or havent seen the light of day in years, he may have the $$ in no time

He desperately needs to have another Momma said to Clean out the Closet Sale.

Mr. Newman, To clear up a few things:
1. Once a Texan, always a Texan, we are a culture onto ourselves...this is a good thing!! Oh, I do listen, just ask my wife how good I listen. She'll be more then happy to tell you.
2. Leave the Smithsonian Vault out of this. The idea is to "gather" not to distribute...maybe, someday I'll part with the one you desire.
3. I'll never live down the "Momma said to Clean out the Closet Sale"! But, it was a stroke of genius.
4. I'm a giving person; who found that last gun of yours at a fraction of it true value and did I ask for a finders fee? No, all I ask is to be in your will, I can wait!

In regards to the 30/40 Highwall, the replies I received leaned a little towards the Ballard rather then the C. Sharps. The Uberti is out of the picture. Guess, I'll save my pennies, sell some project guns and get the Ballard. Any idea of lead time? Steve

What are you doing way over here? Ive been busy hoping between work and trying to get Ball-Wall #2 up and running. I think Ive got the beginnings of a solid load, but need to try a couple more things and some more testing.

Ball-Wall #1 took a little over 14 months to get, # 2 arrived in a little over 7 months. I guess it depends on what your looking at for options IE wood, DSTs etc. Im extremely happy with both of mine so far. They really do build a nice looking rifle. It will be worth the wait, and the money :grin:

Ray, what have you been up to since I left Washington this winter? I'm hoping to get a day of steelheading in while I'm there, if Cadet Command doesn't use up all my time.

Im headed your way again in December to play with the SBCT guys again. Just spent two days getting familiarized with a new simulation for the exercise. I think Ill be on the ground for about 3 weeks, so we should have time to get together. Ill also be down in Portland in September, but its a short trip with 0 time off.

No wheelweights this trip. Whatever spare room I have will be consumed by smuggling Henry Weinhardts Crème and Rootbeer soda back. There is a complete and utter lack of good gourmet soda in the Midwest :cry: When I bring some home for my wife I get extra points :eek:

Having done two summer camps as a Platoon Tac Officer, I feel for you! If its not bad enough that youll spend the summer living in a 4X4 cell on North Fort, theyll cut your per diem down to about $10 bucks a day. I couldnt even save up enough for bullet lube :cry:

Chuck, it's definitely a cheap a$$ way to run an outfit, huh? The thought of possible summer steelhead is the only possible saving grace. When are you gonna come over to Effingham and shoot silhouettes with us? My last match (for the summer, at least) is this Saturday, and the club usually shoots 2 matches on Saturday and 1 Sunday morning...a lot of shooting to be had. I was hoping to save enough per diem to make a downpayment on my gunsmith bills, but...

Dropping my project roller and barrel off with our buddy HST this weekend, to work some magic whilst I'm gone to the Emerald State. I named this gun "Penny" in honor of you :lol: . (Also a not so veiled reference to my budget...)

Steve, working on moving them contender barrels, gotta pay for that next project gun somehow :wink: .
