350 Rem. Mag . Experiences and thoughts

  Ok guys ,

  Found a Remmie guide gun (model 673) in 350 mag ... love the look of the gun and the ballistics i can find (which is very little) look respectable , im sure in the hands of a reloader (which im guessing due to the lack of ammo offerings for this caliber) would be the best and most effective way to see the full potential of this round .... I'm very interested in thoughts and experiences with this caliber from all that can give input ..... The  little i found on this cartridge placed it in 35 whelen ballistics in a short mag (the first) class..

  Any help would be welcomed and appreciated

I have two .350s.  One is a Remington 600, and is limited to 200gr bullets if you want to use the magazine.  Any other size bullet is too long.  I can use 225s if I load them individually into the chamber.  The other is a Ruger M-77, and has a longer magazine and I load 225gr Noslers for it.  250s if I load them individually directly into the chamber.  Both guns are used in tree stands over bait, and shots are usually 10 to 20 yards, on Black Bears.  That is the only things these two guns have been used for in the last 15 years that I have owned them.  I have done no tinkering with loads or anything with these since they are used for close work anyway.  And at those ranges they are devastating.  My only concern is how fast they put bears down.  They do that well, so far no second shots have been needed.

I had a Remington Model 600 in 350 MAG for a while. A short while. If it is as brutal on the target animal as it was on my shoulder, it will kill anything that walks.

I have a Ruger M77 Mark 2 in 350 Magnum.  This is the most versatile cartridge I've ever owned.  I can shoot cast leads accurately at velocities down to 1000 fps, make it shoot like a 35 Remington with Hornady 180 SSPB's or full power loads.  I can get sub MOA groups with Speer 220's and average 2700 fps.  With 250 grain bullets I get 2450 to 2500 fps but the recoil is punishing.  I have since install a new recoil pad and that helps for the big stuff.

To me this cartridge is the first true short magnum cartridge.  Also if you compare bore to case diameter ratios, the 350 Magnum is comparable to the 308 Winchesters.  Essentially a big fat 308 with a belt.  Another bullet I will be trying is the Speer 225 SBT.  Should be an excellent bullet for elk, bear and caribou.

The only bullet that isn't suitable is the Nosler 225 Accu-bond.  This bullet was designed for the 35 Whelen and is too long for the short case.  You could shoot is as a single shot I guess in order to seat the bullet properly.

I have the 673 guide gun in 350 Rem Mag as well.  I've used it on black bear and wild hog with excellent results - one shot kills every time and complete pass through for easy tracking.  Accuracy is good with 3 shot groups of less than an inch and 5 shot groups of an inch or so if I do my part.

The load I've used is Remington brass, WLRM primers, 59 grains IMR 4320, and 225 gr Swift A Frame bullets.

I found that the magazine is short requiring a somewhat stubby bullet - that's why I used the Swifts.  Any other round nose or protected point would work but Swift was the first one I found and I needed to work up a load for a hunt right away.  Nosler partitions and Barnes TSXs with the long ogive just didn't work.  The Speer Grand Slam looks as if it might work well.

I have a 700 Classic in 350 RM and I have a custom length magazine, so I can seat the C.O.L. to 9.30" or as long as the action will take and cycle.  Right now I'm shooting a 225gr TSX with 61.5g Win 748  @2620 Fps.  My 200 yard groups have been around 1.625", although I have shot several groups at one target and have had five round in under an inch at 200 yards.  Most common for me is two 3/4" and one flyer (thinking that it is me???).

This is a great round, it replaced my 700 in 30-06.  Just need to shot something with it.

So far mine has 2 bears to it neither went more than 10 yards after being hit. I use factory remington 200gr core-lokts. They shoot less then an inch at 100 yards. Love the gun!

I have a Ruger 77 mk 2 SS ,on the way ,I ordered  it yesterday...I'm a big 35 Rem. fan,and own a 9.3X62 also ...the 350 Rem. seems like a fine cartridge ,and those 200gr. Rem. bullets supposed to be tuff ..for the 350 and Whelen vel.s
,I'm going have to get me a set of dies next.

I had one of the first model 600's in .350 magnum.  They gave me a box of 250 gr. Remington shells with the purchase.  This was in the 60's.  I did not have scope mounts for it so I sighted it in with the iron sights.  I remember shooting 9 shots to sight it in.  After shooting the 9 shots I felt like I had gone 15 rounds with a prize fighter.  The gun handled wonderfully but had brutal recoil.  I shot one deer at about 150 yds. with the 250's.  I had to shoot it twice.  At the first shot it just stood there and quivered.  On the second shot it fell over.  Both bullets left a caliber size entry and exit holes.

I eventually put a 2 X 7 Leupold in it and loaded the Remington and Hornady 200 gr. bullets.  The Hornady would group around 1" at 100 yds.  The Remington was a pointed bullet and it would cut one hole groups.  When I shot it at the range everyone would gather around to watch.  I think that they were more interested in watching the recoil than the grouping.  The 200 gr. Hornady RN was deadly on deer.  One deer I shot at close range ended up on its back with its legs straight in the air.  I sold the rifle to finance a benchrest gun.  I wish I had it back.  My brother-in-law shot his largest buck with it at 200 yds.  When I visited him this year at Christmas he told me how big of a fool I was for selling the .350.
