Scope and rings
« on: November 30, 2007, 02:01:51 PM »
I just ordered a new H&R Ultra Varmint heavy barrel .22 mag rifle and was wondering what you guys are using for scopes and rings (height of rings also)) on top of yours. Thanks for any help.

Welcome aboard rutt, you have come to a great place. I like and use medium height Millet Angle Locs on many of my Handis and they work great for me. Others here have other preferences and I am sure they will chime in also. Like many things each person will like or prefer different items so get ready for some opinions. For a good solid reasonably priced ring either Leupold Rifleman or Weaver rings are also good. The size of the scopes objective lens and the ocular bell by the hammer will determine what height rings you need but all medium rings are not the same height, keep the slip and packaging because you have have to return whatever you buy. I have been know to purchase both a set of mediums and a set of highs, take them home and see which fit and returned the one I did not need, better than 2 trips to the store and then you can try each for fit and function. Good Luck and keep us posted....<><....:)

Welcome rutt!   :D

MSP summed it up well and provided good advice.  The link Quick suggested offers pictures of various brands and the position's of the scope in relationship to the hammer.

I use a Bushnell Sportsman 3X9X40 with Leupold Rifleman "high" rings on my Ultra .22 mag, as well as each of my other NEF rim-fires.

Congratulations on you new purchase.  The Ultra is a very nice rifle.

That's a bit tougher unless someone has one that recongnizes it, the small power ring that's separate from the ocular bell makes it a good choice for low mounting, a characteristic to look for when consider a scope for an H&R unless you want to modifiy the hammer(see FAQs) the Bushnell Legends are similar, but the current model has different knurling on the AO. It may be an artist rendered scope, it has no marking on the turret cap, so it may just be a generic pic.

I'm thinking of getting the Nikon Pro Staff 3x9x50mm rifle scope in matte finish for my new Ultra. The Weaver or Burris high mount rings should do the job.....right?

You may be able to get away with mediums depending on the rings, the Prostaff has a small power ring, the objective lens size is a moot point, I have 50mm AO scopes mounted in .270" tall medium rings, hammer clearance is the issue. ;)

So I should be able to get the clearance with the objective lens with either the Burris or the Weaver high rings?

Moot point means it doesn't matter, the scope base height it so high above the barrel that objective size doesn't matter much unless you get above 56mm, hammer clearance is where you'll have interference long before the objective size is an issue.

Just temporarily mount the scope over the rail using wood blocks of the appropriate height that match ring heights, they're measured from the top of the scope rail to the bottom of the scope tube. Make some wood blocks out of scrap, tape the scope to the barrel with the blocks between the tube and rail, position the scope so you have a full field of view on the highest power, make sure the hammer clears, then use the block height to choose rings just high enough. ;)
