Any Shotgun News for 2008?
« on: December 01, 2007, 03:31:16 AM »
H & R's 'new' rifle receiver is getting some attention from the guys at the rifle forum - is there any news to report on the shotgun front?  I am still waiting for a turkey gun/barrel that has some decent sights - or at least is drilled and tapped for the addition of some.  Come on, H & R - give us a turkey barrel with something other than just a front bead!
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

Yep, your only option is a 10ga that's drilled and tapped.  No 12ga D&T'd.  Just bead sights.  I hear ya.  You could go with the TDC and add the fiber optics to the vent rib, but that has a 28" barrel.  A little long for turkey hunting.  They have listened on some issues, maybe they're hearin' about this one too.

The only change so far is the type of rifling in the slug guns called "Ultragon", accuracy will be improved over the current style. ;) The sight suggestion will be passed on to H&R.

I'm still wondering about that over/under on their web page... Any word Quick?  I just sent my order in for a tracker II slug barrel, will I get the new rifling?

I'll let ya know about any changes I learn of, I wouldn't hold my breath on the O/U, there's also a left hand barrel release on the Survivor on their home page!! :D

Only if they're out of barrels and they implement the new style rifling before they make another run, they'll use up the existing barrels first which is likely where yours will come from.

Hmmm, interesting.  Wonder why they flipped the image.  Must have been done at the printers when they made the plate.

Some new information on the 2008 UltraLight Slug Hunter. Looks like the old days of drilling and tapping the Tracker II's is finally over. Anybody want a Slug Hunter  with scope mount that weighs about 3 pounds lighter than the USH?? Looks like your prayers have been answered. I does come with the new Ultragon™ parabolic rifling. Read and enjoy!

My question is will the new ultragon barrels fit on the 12 and 20 guage receivers of the ultra slug hunters I already own? Also,Will the new ultragon rifling be available in heavy barrels such as whats on the ultra slug hunters and can we just purchase the barrels from h&r to put on guns we already own?I have both the 12 and 20 guage ush and would like to just get the barrels to mount on them.Any info would be helpful.

Don't know about the fit, but I have seen them listed and they are all on SB1 Frames, even the 12ga Ultra Heavy. So my best guess would be yes. As far as the Ultragon™ rifling, I have read it will be on the 20ga and 12ga Ultra Light Slug Hunter and the Ultra Heavy Slug Hunter guns. It looks as though they may still be making the TrackerII, not sure about the current Ultra Slug Hunters, but I doubt it.

Here is a pic of the Ultra Light, the release said they have 24" barrels, but Sports South has all of them listed as 22" barrels.

New barrels must be fitted to your frame at the factory, send your frame  in according to the instructions on the accessory barrel page, if the barrel includes a forend, you wouldn't need to send the forend in with it. ;)

I am wondering if the Ultra slug hunter has an ejector or an extractor?

I am going to buy one in 20gauge. That polygonal rifling is the cats meow
for a shot gun.

Dunno, but Gordon told Mac a couple years ago that ALL of their firearms would eventually be extractors, first the rifles, then the shotguns and rimfires. I'm hoping they changed their minds on the shotguns and specially on the rimfires. :-\

Amen to not switching to extractors on shotguns ! I can't imagine them doing that. It would not be good on a hunting gun in my opinion.

Any idea what they did to shave off the 3lbs. All the dimension look the same between the USH and the Ultra Light.

Like MSP Ret said thinner barrel, and I am sure it don't have that solid piece of bar stock in the stock. I'm not sure what the bar weighs exactly, but it must be close to 1-1/2 to 2 pounds. I took mine out of my 20ga USH, the recoil isn't bad anyways, even with the 2000 FPS Slugs.

I just bought an ultra 12 slug gun last year.....In Sept....Is this new parabolic rifling going to be that much better for accuracy?...What will they sell for?  Would I be better off to send my ultra in for a change of barrel's? Or just keep it and buy the new version? Feeling kinda gloomy about this.......Kinda like I bought to soon. Drop

They haven't updated much if any on the acc barrel page yet, there are several barrels on there that have been discontinued and the Ultra scope rail is gone too. :-\

Right now I would not believe anything that has been said about the New stuff for 2008. Does anyone know if any of the new stuff is acctually availible yet. I know the Ultragon stuff is not even set for production run til August if at all and the Magnums are in the the dumpster. How about the trap gun? Kurt

H&R actually had the trap gun at the SHOT show, so that's encouraging.  ;)

I am thinking about buying the 20ga ultra... What is the difference with this new Parabolic rifling? Is it worth waiting for... Or will it not be available soon enough to be in use for the 08 season/
