Katadin barrels ??
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:14:14 AM »
What's the thinking behind the Katadin series of barrels for the ProHunter? A 20" barrel on a receiverless rifle, like the Encore, not only looks ridiculous but it robs the cartridge of its potential.

I was interested in a 24" - 26" SS ProHunter barrel (no sights) in 45-70 but it looks like only the 20" Katadin is available.

Curious, which cartridge would have more energy @ 50-100yds; the 45-70 or the 50 S&W magnum, when fired from a 20" bbl?

OK, the 300 grain JHP and the 325 grain Hornady lever rounds are made for 18 to 20 inch barreled lever gus like the 1895 rifle or guide gun.  The Katadin and makes for a really short and handi rifle in the brush for still or stand hunting.  The performance is the same as the lever gun with less weight and shorter over all length.  making it easier to swing in a tree or on the ground in brush at a running critter.
The 500 S&W would have more poop under 100 yards but with the big flat bullet face, I would pick 45-70 for the odd shot over 100 yards.  Or are you thinking of a camp cannon to deal with bruins?  Then the close range and heavier bullet of the 500 would be helpful.

Other than the katahdin BBL's all pro hunter BBL's are 28''  regular Encore BBL's can be had in 24 and 26 inch lengths . Superdown

I don't believe they offer a 28" ProHUnter bbl in 45-70. In  particular, I'd like a SS bbl without sights, not sure there is an Encore bbl like that available either. I'd rather not get a custom barrel because a factory-quality tube is all I really want for this short-range caliber.

ANOTHER QUESTION:

What is the difference between a ProHUnter bbl and an Encore bbl, other than the available chamberings and barrel lengths?

your right they don't offer the 45-70 in the 28 inch pro BBL  but they do offer the 45-70 in the standard SS 24 inch and you can just remove the sights and they look fine .  the difference is the length of the BBL and the pro isn't D&T for sights  just a scope mount and the pro is fluted.

I got a 45/70 24" bull barrel from the custom shop it needed to be throated but now it shoots good and the weight helps with heavy loads.
