Twenty in my gun and twenty in my pocket, don't need that many, just like it that way.

Most of my rifles hold 5 rounds; that's what goes in them. 45 years ago, my cartridge belt held 15 rounds for the rifle plus I had a neat little slide case which held 2 boxes of 22rf for my Hi-Standard Duro-Matic. Can't wear the belt anymore and the Duro-matic was traded on my first Ruger Blackhawk 41Mag in 1980. These days the rifles are still filled, but the cartridge belt has been put aside for a heavy work belt, a 12 round slide for the rifle and a 6 round slide for the revolver. My pocket has another 6 rounds for the revolver, and my fanny pack has an extra 20 round box for the rifle and 50 rounds for the revolver. Might need to so some signaling, or re-sighting. One never knows, and I have yet to run out of ammunition. Sure feels like enough.
I had a pal back in the 60's who used his Grandfather's M94 38-55Win when we went deer hunting in Maine. He had 3 cartridges on our first outing. We were teenagers and hunted two seasons together, harvesting one deer. This memory came up during our "annual holiday phonecall" ( He still lives in Maine, I am now in Idaho) and I queried him concerning the rifle. Well, his Grandfather had left it to him, and he was giving it to his son, now an adult; along with the two remaining cartridges. Felt like enough to him.

fill the magazine regardless and then carry 3 or 4 more.  Leave the rest of the box in the truck.  If I'm going "hiking" I take the whole box just in case.
If I'm going on land I don't know like National Forest then I try to carry extra just in case as well.
