Question about hides for sale in country
« on: December 02, 2007, 10:44:47 AM »
A friend of mine is planning a safari in Namibia next year (I tried to fit in his carry-on but Im "oversized" and way over the 50lb luggage limit!!!).  Ive heard local skins are likely to be available for tourists to purchase in and around the airport.  I want a zebra skin in the worst way.  If he buys one can it be imported without hassles?  Any idea how much they may cost, so I can give him the cash a head of time?

I don't know what zebra hides go for in the markets of Namibia.

I do know what it costs to get ones own zebra hide.  The zebra will go from $800 to $1,000, tanning and applying felt to the hide to make a rug goes for about $300 in Africa last I knew and then there are the shipping costs to the U.S.A. which will run several hundred dollars.

I'll be going to South Africa next year and plan to bring back another zebra hide since they're so pretty.
