I bought two Stevens 200's in .243. Stevens repair service is great. The rifles were crap ! Wouldn't shoot factory loads or handloads I've been using for 30 yrs. Blew the extractor and melted the firing pins(factory loads. Buy your self a good used Rem. 700 adl.

My Stevens have been perfect. Might look into the new Marlin bolt action, list for $329, has an accu type trigger.............

maybe you can explain to me how your ammo' "blew the extractor and melted the firing pins" i've never heard of any such. i have a hard time 'imagining' such a phenomenon.

you may be giving us Remington fans a bad name. ........or at least trying to.

I heard the Stevens 200 was discontinued, any truth to that? If so, that is a real shame.

HA HA! I paid $242 for my .223 Stevens. Of course it was one of those "at cost" type things

Actually it was even cheaper than that as the first thing did was e-bay the crappy stock for $47 and sold the BBl on SSF's trader for $60

i guess somebody is/maybe feeling a little too humbled at your bargain. i won't speculate as to why. you beat the $249 price tag and that's a good thing.

however, i think you got away with an interesting little 'coup' by selling off that cheap barrel and stock. it may be well-worth-it to put a decent barrel and stock on that action if you like the design of their trigger. the trigger is not of interest to me, since i like to re-work the Model 700 triggers. but i can see how you'd like a better barrel that easily headspaces onto that action. with a better stock the rifle begins to take on interest! it could be a real shooter that is easily 'smithed at home!

i've been blessed in the past with unbelieveable markdowns at both wal mart and dicks clothing and sporting goods. i've got to admit to 4 rifles over the years that were very generous blessings......
including a model 700 ADL Syn' in .270 win' when they closed 'em out in north olmsted, ohio for $200 just a couple years ago. i let a very good friend eventually have that one later the same year. but it was a hell of a rifle for $200 because of wal marts discontinuing so many locations selling firearms. and it was a bargain no matter how many, or how few other buyers were grabbing them up.

they are only rifles, but they sure become more interesting when the price drops on 'em.

It would be nice if the OP would come on back in and let us know what he purchased or what he found. He has not posted since the original post but has looked in occasionally. Like I said I purchased a Stevens in 7mm-08 from Walmart for $300.00 not the $249.00 but the best I could find the manual says it has an accutrigger.

Stevens 200's don't have the accu-trigger, unless they just started. Anyway, my 25-06 and 7-08 don't.

100% correct the stevens has a normal trigger none of that accu-glock garbage. I would have bought a LRPV action for my build except that I cannot tolerate the accu-trigger in the least.

I have a accu-trigger on my Savage 93 17 HMR. I like it. But, I've never had a rifle with a good after market trigger either. Thinking about one for my Stevens, or have my gunsmith smooth out the stock trigger.

.......... 'their' triggers were made of sintered metal and were only surface hardened. they would not last once they were stoned/filed/sanded beyond the rather shallow surface hardening. for best results you want to keep that in mind when you ask a 'smith to "smooth out" a stock trigger.

I just went through this same ordeal this past week, only my limit was $300. The Wal-Mart the net town over has ADL's for $325 but only in .270 or 7mmRM. I wanted a .308 or 7mm-08, and narrowed it down to the Stevens 200, which is $319 here, or a H&R Handi Rifle. Neither are what I REALLY want, so I am going to save my money and wait a few more months. I hope to make rank this year, and I will get a nice pay raise once I sew it on. The wife told me to just wait, and double it to $600 and get what I want. I am thinking a T3, or a Savage 14 in 7mm-08. Now to make rank first.

(it just can't sayl it!

). i think that the wait is worth it if you can find a rifle more to your liking with a better stock and a better barrel. a friend had a model 10 in .308 years ago (tactical) with the 20" barrel and it shot well. but i can't begin to see where it would outshoot a model 700 adl' synthetic or a vanguard. i just didn't see it.

one more thing: i'd take a .270 caliber over a 7mm-08 personally. i like the ballistics of the 7mm-08; but don't think it's the equal of the .270 ballistics -- unless shooting match-grade projectiles. the .270 doesn't have many mfr's of match-grade bullets. as a hunting/varminting round i think it's a better hitter at long-range than is the 7mm. the .270 is more cartridge including with those phenomenal 150 and 160 gr' nosler partitions that will do such a good job on Very Large critters.

Sierra makes 2 Match bullets for the 270, 115gr and 135 Matchkings.

And Berger will putout 3 VLD 270 bullets this year, 130gr, 140gr, and 150gr.

There is some growing love for the 270 as far as Match bullets go, I believe the WSM is another reason for such.

Perhaps not with that particular rifle but I have seen .308 Savage rifles shooting well enough that I would not bet on a Weatherby Vanguard (mfg by Howa) or a Remington ADL/BDL shooting any better. The one Savage I had (Model 110 in .22-250 with a sporter weight barrel) was wicked accurate - every bit as accurate as the Remington BDL in .308 Win that I have now and probably more so.

i re-read some stuff from www.snipercentral.com recently. i looked at the equipment icon, and picked the rifle reviews. just like some of the stuff on www.6mmbr.com, i see remingtons holding their own. and at snipercentral their review of the model 700 sps tactical (20" barrel length) speaks volumes about remington's model 700. they had groups in the "3"s ( three-tenths of an inch and change)with that sps tactical! yes, their review of the model 700 sps varmint (26" barrel length) was not as complimentary though the rifle is sub-1 moa capable. but, we can remember that shorter barrels, for a given diameter at the muzzle and 'profile', tend to be stiffer and more accurate than longer barrels. the sps tactical was not much more expensive than the model 10 by Sssssssaaaaaa

i have seen recently the arrival of more match-grade projectiles for the .270 caliber rifles. i'm waiting to see someone take a title with one at Camp Perry, Ohio.

I have been wanting a 7mm-08 since I sold my Encore in that caliber 3 years ago. I have a 270 WSM, but I am more a 7mm (.284) guy myself. I may actually look into the CZ 550, as they have my attention of late.

IMHO, which one feels and fits better? Buy IT! I don't give a hoot for a fancy gun that doesn't fit. Cartridge selection is spliting hairs and asking for an argument. Both guns are capable of out shooting alot of shooters (not me

) As long as the bullet can kill the game at the distance you'll shot at it's all good, and even better if you spin your own!
Optics, well thats a different story. Take the scope off any Savage you get and mount it to a squirrel gun it'll be useful there. Then buy a leupold

at the vendor's! after buying the scope you can always try a little patience 'til a decent rifle goes on sale and be glad later on that you did.

i admit that at one time i wanted a .280 Rem' caliber rifle. the bullets made in .284" diameter are phenomenal. so i agree, as well, with a 7mm-08. it seems to be more of a cartridge, however, if you get a barrel that is at least 24" long. i just can't help but notice in articles i've read that the extra barrel time with the 7mm-08 is definitely a plus. sure, it helps with a lot of cartridges; but it helps some more noticeably than others.

i think that 'acceptable' projectiles in .277" diameter are somewhat less expensive, however. and it is a 'hammer' with proper bullets. with today's premium bullets, to include nosler partitions as ''premiums'', one can take a .270 Win' to alaska and hunt brown bear! more and more it is gaining that kind of recognition. no, it's not a ''stopper'' cartridge like a .444 Marlin, or a .338 Win' mag'; but it is enough for other than close-quarters-dancing with 'brownies'.
