reduce recoil on Buffalo Classic
« on: December 03, 2007, 09:18:44 AM »
The recoil is not that bad, but try to empty a box of 50 reloads and it starts to hurt pretty good.

I have heard about adding lead shot to the stock bolt hole and I think I will try it.

Has anybody tried the "kick killer"?  How well do they fit?  do you recall which size you used?

I am not a fan of recoil I think that was one reason I sold the B.C. 45-70 but I did find using the past shoulder recoil pad did help alot.
PAST SELL ONE CALLED MAG PLUS STATE IT WILL HANDLE A 500 NITRO CAL.
now that is a big round would think double the recoil of a 45-70

I have a bad shoulder ,but my 45-70 was doable withe the addition of a BreaKO recoil  reducer,in the butt and a Limbsaver recoil pad.I cut a broom stick to make up the distance between the recoil reducer and the pad.hth.   Doug

Thanks again Tim for the link to the FAQ.  I also did a search and found the post where one gentleman said he bought the medium and it fit great.  I measured the back of the stock, its 4.75" x 1.20”.  I do not know if H&R has changed the stock size over the years.

The sizing chart shows
# Sizes:XS(4.62" x 1.48")
# S(5.02" x 1.50")
# M(5.20" x 1.65")
# L(5.30" x 1.74")

Looks like the small would fit better.  Just trying to see what size others have used.

I find that my Handi 45/70 with the bolt hole full of .75 musket balls kicks less than my 1895 Marlin with the same load.  On the Marlin I have a 'Shooters Friend' recoil pad and it makes 300 gr 50 g Re#7 loads shootable.  I am probably going to drop back my loads to Trapdoor level as the damage  the Marlin loads did to two deer this year was excessive.  Trapdoor loads with Re#7 or 2400 should be no problem to shoot.  I too am not a fan of recoil!

I understand what I am shooting will have recoil, and really its nice to feel some kick and it don't bother me that much.  But I was shooting on Saturday afternoon, shot 37 rounds of 45-70 with 405gn lead bullets, at the bottom range of the loading scale for the powder I was using.  Its now Tuesday and I my shoulder still feels like I was was shooting.  I think what happened is the last couple shots I was using a bag on the bench which caused me to lean over.  Now the butt of the gun is against that bone in the shoulder and not just meat.  That's when it hurt.  I think I need to switch to sitting on the floor and using shooting sticks  ;D

PAST Magnum Plus Shield Recoil Pad works for the bench on all my heavy kickers, including a W&H 1871 Buffalo Classic shooting 405 grain bullets 2000 fps.  You can find them for under $25.

The last time I shot the 45-120 BC, was with the 555gr Saeco #20 at 1800fps, I used all of the above, PAST Mag pad, lead filled pipe in the stock bolt hole, and a Galco recoil pad, with me seated upright from the bench using a Premier rest ......  but a Lead Sled works even better!! ;)

Yep, even my 1894 44 mag with a limbsaver on it will bite if I let it get up on a bony place.

I bought the small, it fits perfect.  So My wife wrapped it up for Christmas.

Remember guys, in the good ole days of the BP 45-70 they were accurately lobbing 500 gr booollits at around 1200 fps out a long long way-- 600 yards, so to be 'prototypical' you don't have to take punishing recoil!

Enjoy!

All I am doing is 1200-1400FPS with 405 Gn lead.  I must be a recoil wimp!  Of course I am trying to go through around 50 rounds in an hour  ;D

I just bought a different powder (h4198) and I plan on loading up some 500 gn bullets

You might want to give 5744 a try. The recoil seems to be less with it. Be careful not to double charge though!
