Marble's Woodcraft Sheath Knife
« on: December 03, 2007, 09:21:10 AM »
I just ordered a Marble's Woodcraft sheath knife from Smoky Mountain Knife Works Thursday and it came today (Monday) by UPS. The quality of the knife is better than I had expected and the blade is as sharp as a straight razor. The leather sheath is also well made and sturdy. I would recommend this knife to any outdoorsman. It will make an excellent knife for skinning a deer or general outdoor usage. BTW, in the pic you can't see it but right underneath the Marble's brand name is stamped USA.

Here's a pic of it from their site.

I'd heard that the Woodcraft and a couple of the older patterns are still being made here; the rest are outsourced to China.  Glad you like it.

I think it will make a good hunting knife and all around use. The blade is so sharp, I tried shaving my left arm and with a slight nudge of the blade edge, I was shaving hair like a razor. I had an old Western knife with the same blade design and like it for deer skinning chores.

I have one that looks like that - that I received as a gift from my grandfather before he passed away 20 years ago.

It has the original sheath and has a date of 1916 on the blade.

It is a little bulky and the chrome is not like modern knives, but it did take a good edge and it is very sharp.

My grandfather also had a matching camping hatchet that had a sheath that covered the sharpened edge of the blade and folded back when you used it.  But one of my other family members got it - before I got there.

I didn't know what it was - or how much it was worth, until the internet came along 10 years later.

It's probably worth more than the knife.

You can still get a Marble's hatchet that is like you describe. They won't be old ones like your Grandfather had, but they are still made by Marble's .

If your knife was made in 1916, it should be made out of carbon steel and very good carbon steel at that. I like a carbon steel knife as it will hold a very sharp edge, but you have to keep the blade oiled to prevent rust. Back in those days steel was made in Open Hearth furnaces and it took about 14 to 16 hours to make steel.
