.224 75gr A-Max Bullets 1-9" Twist ???
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:09:55 PM »
Is a 1-9" twist fast enough to stabilize .224 cal 75 gr A-Max bullets?

Range would be 600 yards. Rifle is a Savage model 12 BVSS in 223 Rem.

Thanks,
Marc

I have a friend who loads the 77gr Match King in a 1-9 twist. He says it really shoots.---------Whoa,------his may be a 1--8, not sure. Load up a few and let us know if they keyhole at 100yds.

The heaviest I have been able to get to stabilize in my.223 are 69gr. But I'm still trying. Kurt

I've never gotten anything heavier than 68gr. to fly dependably through a 1-9 at long range and even they start to become unstable at less range than you're wanting shoot.  If you get them to work for you, I would love to hear what you did to make it happen.  Like Lloyd referred to earlier I'm afraid you're going to really have to push them to even have a chance.  Be careful!

I am building a 22-250 right now.  My goal is to shoot the 75's.  I ordered a Krieger barrel.  Krieger recommended a 1 in 8 twist.  Tom.

a 1 in 8 might be about perfect for the .223. Ive got a 1in7 colt ar and it does well with 60s but not well at all with 55s. Maybe the the 1in 8 would allow 55s and you can allways find lots of cheap 55s out there.

I had trouble with the 75 gn. A max. in my .22-6mm, they would not make the target. I called Hornady and they told me that 3,500 fps. with a 1 in 9 twist was max for that bullet. I was loading them at 3,500, but shooting them in an 8 twist and they were exploding in the air.

My remington sps tactical with 1-9 twist will not stabilize the 75 A-Max, BUT I believe it is due to the LONG bullet length. The same rifle will stabilize the  Hornady 75 BTHP, Serria 77 BTHP. Ive had bad results with the 80 grain seirra BTHP and berger 75 VLD's as well. Ive been wanting to try berger 70 VLD's but have not yet. Im getting 1/2 moa with the 75 and 77 BTHP and 68,69 BTHP. Ive only shoot out to 300 yards so far and rifle and bullets are still at or just over moa (3 inches) depending on how well Im reading the wind.
