Christmas Thoughts

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,

I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.

My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,

My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,

Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,

Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,

Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.

In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,

So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,

But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the

sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,

And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,

A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,

Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.

Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,

Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,

"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!

Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,

You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,

Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light

Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,

I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,

That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"

Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',

And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,

But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,

The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

I can live through the cold and the being alone,

Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,

I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,

Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,

To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,

Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,

"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you've done,

For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,

"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,

To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,

To know you remember we fought and we bled.

Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,

That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Thanks, Larry.  It sure makes you remember the important things in life.

It angers me when our crap-for-brains politicians, (and some of our peers out there in lala land) try to tell us that the important issues are education, the economy, and other mindless drivel when anyone with even one/one billionth of an ounce of gray matter knows that THE CENTRAL ISSUE IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN NATIONAL SECURITY.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

You are all very welcome.

I had a brother-in-law who serve a bit over a year in Iraq back in 2004-2005.  Most of the time he was in Camp Marez in Mosul, but also spent some time up in the Northern Alliance area.  He was on duty at Camp Marez the day the suicide bomber blew up the mess tent killing so many and wounding large numbers of our soldiers.  His EMT training kicked in and he gave aid to the wounded, and then had to help collect pieces and bodies.  He was later wounded in a mortar attack that killed the Iraqi Guardsman working beside him.  The guardsman took most of the blast, saving Phil's life, leaving him with only shrapnel in one arm.  They gave him antibiotics and pain killers, left the piece of shrapnel lodged in his arm in between the two bones, stitched him up, and put him back to work two days later. While he was gone, he missed his son's first steps, his first words, and his first birthday.  We all did our best to send care packages weekly, and almost daily would try to email him or get on Yahoo chat if he was on base and available when not on duty.  We also got webcams for both he and his wife so that if he was on base, off duty, and could get on line, they could chat and he could see her and the kids, and they could see him.  It was a very long year filled with fear and loss.  We are all so glad that he returned home alive.  He is proud of his mission, and felt the Iraqi people were by and large happy that America freed them from Saddam, and were terrified that we would leave before they were safe, allowing things to end up as bad or worse than they had been in the beginning.  The biggest problem was that most were so unfamiliar with the concept of freedom that they didn't know how to deal with it.

So, when I hear these lame ass sniveling moonbat liberals start whining about mean old George Bush picking on the poor Iraqis to get their oil (last time I checked we seem to be paying more than ever for gas and oil), or whining about how our mean soldiers are torturing innocent detainees (insert terrorists) by making them strip to their shorts and stay up at night listening to bad music (at least we don't treat them like Nicholas Berg or Eugene Armstrong), I can't decide whether to pity their lack of intellect, or just give them two in the hat!

Then I come across website www.brushtail.com.au/nick_berg_hypothesis.html where this moron claims the video of Berg's beheading was staged by the CIA to shift public opinion in favor of the evil Bush...  Two in the hat again comes to mind.

When I see Eugene Armstrong's beheading video (http://www.warriorsfortruth.com/video-beheading-eugene-armstrong.wmv)I am filled with a combination of nausea, disgust, and white hot anger.  How can the liberal morons look at that, and then talk about Abu Ghraib mistreatment, or some secret CIA plot to fake the videos and send them to Al Jazeera??

Maybe we should just collect them all and drop them over off at the Mahdi Army headquarters.  They can try MA Governor Patrick's approach...  He stated at this year's 9-11 ceremony in Boston that ultimately 9-11 was simply an example of people failing to understand each other and learning to love one another.

I think it was Lenin who said that American liberals were "useful idiots".  I sure wish they would be "useful" somewhere else.

Sorry for the vent.  I needed to get it off my chest.
