1st post w/ golfball mortar design question

Hello, my name is Will.  I live in Titusville, Florida.
I can watch some pretty cool fireworks here when the space shuttles and rockets launch.
Like the title says, I'm new here. 
I started by checking out the H&R forum, then I stumbled across this when I "Googled" firecracker cannons.
I have much to read here and I'm glad this forum is here.  Lots of great info.  Thanks for being here and sharing it.
My interest all started with a desire for a Winchester salute cannon.
The cartridge dependency was undesirable, especially since it was black powder only to begin with.
Then I saw some pages showing these little golf ball mortars and I was tickled pink.
So, here I am now.
I used to be a machinist/mold maker.
I went to my garage and picked up this piece of 6Al-4V titanium that I bought years ago.
It is 2.525" O.D. x 4.95" long.
A bore for a golf ball leaves me 3/8" side wall thickness.
The titanium has tensile strength of 130k and a yield strength of 100k.
Does that give me an adequate safety margin?
Shall I make the ti bar into a colorfully anodized "thunder mug" instead?

Although I know virtually nothing about the characteristics of titanium (other than it work hardens very fast), 2.5" diameter for a golf ball mortar (suitably chambered, of course) is plenty.  Try this thread for some golf ball mortar plans.

WELCOME to the board!

Golf-ball mortars take the standard recommended powder chamber with surrounding metal but need very little wall thickness beyond that BECAUSE using golf-balls there is very little pressure sustained in carrying the very light golf-ball down the tube.

Not so if you use something like iron or lead.

So, keep the use limited to golf-balls and load accordingly.

I can't wait to see the pictures of a TITANIUM golf-ball mortar!

 I wouldn't hesitate to make your Ti mortar. However, I wouldn't bother with the anodize. In my experience with color-anodized titanium medical implants and instruments, I've found it to be a very fragile coating that doesn't stand up to much handling. It can be sealed, but it doesn't really help much for an item subject to what a cannon sees.

Thanks for the welcomes and the replies.

GGaskill, I appreciate the links.  I will probably make the chamber .75" dia. x .75" deep with a 1/4" bottom corner radius.
This leaves .875" on the chamber sides and over that on the base.  I'm still deciding on whether to add trunnions and put it on a sled, or
attach it rigidly to a base like an eprouvette.

You bet, golf balls it is going to be.  I am simply looking for a salute, and the occasional lobbing of golf balls.  I don't have a large property,
so I'll have to drive to a field for "plinking."

That's right!  Everybody knows you need an over sized titanium wood to drive the ball downrange.

I agree, it was just the jewelry side of me coming out.  I will give it a bead blast finish for that gray hull metal look.

The reason I am going to use the Ti is simply:  because it is there.
I also live on the coast so corrosion concerns are eliminated, and it should be easy to clean.
This project will take some time just because I need to find the equipment now.  I moved from Pennsylvania where all my equipment and contacts were.
Something will turn up (no pun intended.)
I have a 1.25"x6" bar of 6Al-4V that I intend to make into a small .40 caliber gonne.
All talk for now, I need to make some action!
